Dell Scholars Applications Due January 15, 2013

The Dell Scholars program, an initiative of the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, recognizes students who have overcome significant obstacles to pursue their educations. In turn, these scholars serve as positive role models and change the trajectories for their siblings, friends and their communities.

The Dell Scholars Program places greater emphasis on a student’s determination to succeed than just academic record and test scores. We empower students to gain the knowledge; skill-sets and attitude needed to cope with their changing world and the circumstances in which they live. We award 300 scholarships annually and since 2004, have provided students with $49 million in college scholarships and support services.

Dell Scholars receive $20,000 each to complete their higher education over the course of six years. In addition, the Dell Scholars Program provides its students with technology, a private scholar networking community, resources, and mentoring to ensure they have the support they need to achieve their college degrees.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible to apply for the Dell Scholars Program scholarship, you must meet the below listed criteria:

·         Participating in a Michael & Susan Dell Foundation approved college readiness program for a minimum of two of the last three years

·         Graduating from an accredited high school this academic year

·         Earning a minimum of a 2.4 GPA

·         Demonstrated need for financial assistance

·         Planning to enter a bachelor's degree program at an accredited higher education institution in the fall directly after your graduation from high school

·         U.S. citizenship or permanent residency

Dell Scholars are students who demonstrate their desire and ability to overcome barriers and to achieve their goals. Your application will be evaluated on your:

·         Individual determination to succeed

·         Future goals and plans to achieve them

·         Ability to communicate the hardships you have overcome or currently face

·         Self motivation in completing challenging coursework

·         Demonstrated need for financial assistance

California Association of Collectors Educational Foundation Scholarship

California Association of Collectors Educational Foundation Scholarship

First Award- $2,500       Second Award- $2,000      Third Award- $1,500

This scholarship is open to California high school seniors who are legal residents and plan to attend an accredited public or private college, university or trade school as a full time student. Recipients must show proof of attendance within 12 months of the award and show proof of enrollment in a minimum of 12 credit hours.

You will need to write a 700-1,000 word, double spaced, 12 point font typed essay on the following topic:

The Importance of Establishing and Maintaining Good Financial Credit During Your College Years. Do not include personal information (your name etc) and do not staple your essay.

What to Submit:

You must submit your essay and a copy of the completed copy of the application signed by you and your parent.

eQuality Scholarship Online Applications Now Available

The eQuality Scholarship Collaborative awards scholarships to honor and encourage California students for their service to the lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender community. Scholarships may be used for post-secondary education at accredited institutions - colleges, universities, and trade schools. This scholarship is for $6,000 and you do not have to be lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender to apply

Eligibility:

·         All applicants must:
have demonstrated service to the LGBTQ community (applicants of all sexual orientations and gender identities are eligible)

·         be available for an interview either by phone or in-person on 10 or 16 Mar 2013.

·         be a resident of northern or central California (visit www.equalityscholarship.org for a map of counties included);

·         have completed or expect to complete high school or equivalent between 1 Jul 2008 and 30 Jun 2013;

MATTERS OF LIFE & DEATH SCHOLARSHIP WRITING CONTEST GUIDELINES 2012-2013

WRITING CONTEST OBJECTIVES

The goals of the Matters of Life & Death Scholarship Writing Contest are to help California students develop awareness of the issues surrounding end-of-life decision-making and to financially assist college-bound scholars.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS 

To participate in the Matters of Life & Death Scholarship Writing Contest you must meet the following requirements:

• Currently attending a California high school (or home-school),
• Currently a high school junior or senior,
• Planning to pursue a degree at an accredited college in the United States, and
• United States citizen or Permanent Resident of the United States.

AWARDS

$1,000 for First Place, 

$500 for Second Place, and 

$250 for Third Place

DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS

Each applicant must answer the question:

Why do I need an advance directive when I turn 18?

Use the “Useful Links” (below) to familiarize yourself with what an advance directive is, how it benefits you to have one, and how it might be detrimental if you do not have one. Be creative in your essays, well organized, concise and clear, and show familiarity with the issue.

Please follow these guidelines when submitting your entry:

1.     Submit a typewritten essay, no more than 1,000 words, in Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF. The essay must be in 12-point Times New Roman font and single-spaced. 

2.     In the same document, provide a cover page with the following information: 

Your name, address, phone number, email address, school’s name, your grade level, and number of words in your essay (word count should not include the cover page, title, or bibliography).

NOTE:  Do not send the cover page and essay as two documents. They should be submitted as one single document.

3.     When saving the document, name the file as “your last name, your first name” (for example, “Washington, George.doc”).

4.     All entries must be submitted by email no later than May 15, 2013. Email your entries toadmin@compassionandchoicesnca.org and in the email subject line, write: “your last name, your first name”.

When writing your essay, keep in mind:

• Essays are judged on creativity, quality, organization, clarity, and familiarity with the issue;
• Do not plagiarize. If you quote from a source, cite the source (either in a bibliography or footnote);
• As you write your essay, show us your understanding of the essay prompt;
• Remember: this is not a term paper—your creativity counts, and
• Re-read your essay to see if every sentence adds strength to your essay.

AWARD NOTIFICATION

Winners will be selected and notified by May 31, 2013. Winners will be featured in the Compassion & Choices Northern California newsletter and Web site. The first-place winner may be invited to present the winning essay at a public meeting. All other applicants will receive an email by the same date notifying them of our results.
