PG&E Scholarships Applications Are Open

Deadline February 1, 2013

PG&E has a wide variety of scholarships to offer ranging from the $1,000 to the $5,000. Check these out, there is probably one  you qualify for! (link at the bottom of the post)

Instructions

You need to please send a separate application package to each Employee Resource Group to which you are applying. Be sure to review the application supplements for each group to which you are applying, as there are additional requirements for each group. The applications and all supporting documents must be postmarked or e-mailed by Friday, February 1, 2013.

Required documents for a complete scholarship application packet:

q Completed and signed application form

q Essay(s) on the topic specified per the erg application supplement

q Copy of PG&E bill from within the last six months or other proof of residency in the PG&E service area

q Two (2) letters of recommendation from teachers, guidance counselors, coaches, community leaders, mentors, or work supervisors

Some of the ergs require additional documents. Be sure to review the erg application supplements for those requirements.

Applicants for the PrideNetwork scholarships should not complete this application. Instead, please go to www.equalityscholarship.org for a link to the online application.

u  You will be notified by April 12, 2013, of your scholarship application status and next steps (if applicable).

u  Scholarship recipients must attend an accredited school within the United States and provide a student ID number before any scholarship funds will be disbursed.

u  PG&E scholarships are mailed directly to recipients’ schools and may only be used for tuition, fees, books, and supplies. Checks are not sent directly to students nor their families.

Horatio Alger Association Scholarship

Deadline October 25, 2012

You will need to go online to apply for this scholarship.

Eligibility requirements:

• Graduating senior (class of 2013)
• attending a 4-year accredited college or university and pursuing a Bachelor's Degree
• critical financial need (family income of less than $50,000)
• involvement in co-curricular and community activities
• demonstrated integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity
• Minimum GPA 2.0
• United States Citizenship

Futuro Con Leche Scholarship

Deadline:December 15, 2012

The Hispanic Scholarship fund and Got Milk have teamed up to offer ten $4,000 scholarships for high school seniors of Hispanic Heritage.

Eligibility requirements:

• Be of Hispanic heritage
• US citizen, legal permanent resident or an eligible non-US resident
• High school graduating senior planning to enroll full-time seeking a degree at a four-year or two year accredited U.S. institution in the US, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands or Guam during the 2013-2014 academic year
• Minimum GPA 3.00 on a 4.00 scale
• Must be eligible to receive a Pell Grant
• Must apply for federal financial aid by completing the FAFSA in 2012
• Must write a maximum 250 word essay telling us about  your high school journey and how making milk part of your routine has helped you succeed.

This is an online only application so stop by the counseling office and pick up the directions to apply for this.

Stokes Educational Scholarship Program

Deadline: November 15th, 2012

Qualifications for High School Students – You must major in computer science or computer/electrical engineering and meet the following requirements:

• Must be a U.S. citizen
• Eligible to be granted a security clearance
• A high school senior at the time of application
• A minimum SAT/College Board score of 1600 (1100 Critical Reading and Math, 500 in Writing) or ACT of 25
• A GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale is preferred
• Demonstrated leadership abilities

How to Apply:

·         Program applications will be accepted between September 1st and November 15th each year. Applications must be submitted online or postmarked on or before November 15th.  Applications received after the deadline, as well as incomplete packets, will not be considered.

To apply for the Stokes Educational Scholarship Program, applicants must first:

Stokes Educational Scholarship Program

EHS COUNSELING NEWSLETTER- September, 2012

Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year! We are pleased to announce that the school year has launched successfully and smoothly, with a few changes to our order of operations. This year, in effort to avoid waiting in line for appointments with counselors during the last of sunny summer days, we opted to use an email communication system for receiving and responding to schedule change requests. In the two weeks prior to the first day of school, The Counseling Department reviewed and responded to over ­­­­1500 emails from parents and students. To accommodate everyone, our Navi Lab was open to any parent or student who may not have had computer or internet access. Our Counseling Department values the importance of having students start in the appropriate class placements on the first day of school, and understands that the students and parents want this as well. This year, as a result of the new schedule change request system, we concluded all schedule changes by the second Friday of the school year. Students and teachers benefit from this efficient system, which has meant a quality beginning  for each class, and less instruction time missed due to inappropriate class placements. The new system has provided an opportunity for families to communicate with their counselor from the comfort of their home, offices, or remote locations.

We have just about a month of school underway, and the rest of the semester is very swiftly approaching! This is especially true for seniors who will be applying to colleges and universities.  It is an exciting time of year, but one which is filled with much anxiety for our students. ALL STUDENTS: Thursday, September 27, 2012 is the Humboldt Del-Norte College Night from 5pm to 8 pm at Eureka High. This is an exceptional night to meet college reps for colleges from coast to coast. Now is the time to begin thinking about colleges that are right for you. You will be able to talk to college reps about campus life, college majors, their college culture, and what it’s like to be a student at their university! Look for the flyers in the classrooms and halls, YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS IT!

SENIORS

Seniors needing to recover non college-prep credits through the ECS Adult Education program, please contact your counselor to set up an appointment to get started as soon as possible. The Adult Ed program opened on September 10, 2012.

The application window for California State University campuses is October 1-November 30^th, 2012. You may apply and find information at: www.csumentor.edu. 

The application window for The University of California is November 1-November 30^th, 2012. However, the application opens on October 1^st, so students can begin writing their personal statements now, and begin to work on their applications early! Do not wait until the middle of November to begin writing your personal statements and applications. If you can smell the turkey and the stuffing, then you’ve waited too long to get started! Applications sites have been known to crash on the final day of the application window, so keep vigil!

There are LOTS of resources for help writing your personal statements, and any other questions you may have about college application processes. The UC has its own YouTube channel, and has lists of videos meant to help you and your family make college admissions as easy as possible. Visit www.collegeweeklive.com, another EXCELLENT resource for all of your college and financial aid questions. College Week Live hosts webinars with colleges from all over the nation, and there are a multitude of videos answering questions that parents, students, and even counselors might have. Check it out!

Humboldt State University Application Review Day is Saturday October 19, 2012. Any student at EHS who meets the requirements for a CSU is admitted to HSU on this day if they attend. Students should apply to HSU prior to attending the event via www.csumentor.org. Even if HSU is not your first choice, GO TO THIS EVENT! Seniors, keep as many options open for yourself as possible-apply broadly and to many different colleges! HSU is a sure choice if your first choices don’t work out! Seniors, if you still need to take the SAT or ACT, you must take these tests no later than December 2012 for your 4 year university applications. The UC’s only take English and Math test scores from the same test session (E.g. If you took tests in July and September, you must report English and Math scores from either July OR September, not both). The CSU’s allow a student to choose their best English and Math scores of any test session. Stay tuned to the Counselor Blog and visit these websites for SAT and ACT information: (SAT) www.collegeboard.com, (ACT) www.actstudent.org. Subject tests are no longer a requirement for UC admission, however it may be recommended by some programs and majors. You can find this information at www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/campuses/index.html.  Subject test scores cannot hurt you, regardless of your score.

Navi lab: The first Navi lab sessions will be the week of October 8^th-12^th. We will be working on the UC/CSU applications, updating the Navigator 4 year plans, and reviewing the community college website. We are excited to meet with seniors in the lab this fall to assist with the college applications and planning process!

JUNIORS

Keep your focus! Sophomore and Junior years are the years that universities will focus on when you apply to colleges in the fall of your senior year. Keep your goals in mind at all times! Write your goals on a sticky note and post it somewhere where you will see it every day to remind yourself what you’re working hard for each day.

Navi Lab: October 8^th-12^th, students will continue the development of their E-Portfolios in the Navi Lab, a great tool for job and college applications. We will continue to explore college and career options as well.

FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORES

Navi lab: Between October 29^th and November 2^nd this fall, Freshmen will be working on the development of their 4-year plan in the labs. Sophomores will be updating their 4-year plans as well. All students will explore college and career options for their future.

Take advantage of the Eureka High School learning pathways, which offer an opportunity for you to explore a particular area of interest and develop job skills. The pathways are a great way to become well-informed in your area of interest, and they look great on your resumes. Students who complete a learning pathway also receive an honorary cord to wear for high school graduation.

EVERYONE

We are very excited to be back in action with our awesome Eureka High Students. We encourage you to contact a teacher or counselor if you have questions about anything related to college or jobs for your future. We are here to help you make a plan for your adult life, and to help you reach it! Remember, nothing comes to you without a little hard work! The College Recommendation Letter from Your Counselor: Do you really need it?

The answer is Yes!

As you begin to apply to colleges, you will find that most colleges will ask for recommendation letters to go with or upload to their application.

One of the most commonly used application these days is The Common App. It is electronic and everything can be done online. In the past, they asked Counselors to write a recommendation letter for the student, but this  year, counselors can opt out.

So how important is that recommendation letter from your counselor? It turns out it’s very important!  According to an article found in the Huffington Post called “A Hidden Gem: The Counselor Recommendation”:

“The school counselor recommendation is one of the most important and overlooked portions of the college admissions process.

This year, the Common Application has added two options for school counselors to decline sending an evaluation for students:

• "I do not have sufficient personal knowledge of this student."

• "The demands of my counseling load do not afford me sufficient time."

With these new options, it is critical that you give school counselors a reason to write you evaluations by developing a personal connection and showing sincere effort in your academics and extracurricular activities.”

Another article “5 Ways You Can Help Your Counselor Write a Better Recommendation Letter” has great tips for helping YOU help your counselor to write a great letter of recommendation.

“Most colleges will tell you that the school-based counselor recommendation is one of the most important elements of your application. And they will also tell you that “generic” or “cut and paste” narratives don’t do much to further an applicant’s candidacy for admission.”

This article goes into detail regarding the steps you need to take to get the best letter of recommendation you can. It helps you streamline the process to work to your advantage.

We already have a great tool right here in the Counseling office to help you in getting a more personalized letter of recommendation: the letter of recommendation worksheet. 

You just fill this out as completely as you can, turn it in and that will give your counselor something to go on.

You can also come in and fill out a request to see your counselor and they will call you in so you can talk to them about the process. They will be classrooms and  have workshops in the Navi Lab throughout the school year to help you.

The counselors are here to give you the tools to help you get a head start on your future. Utilize your resources! EHS wants our students to succeed!

USC First Year Applicant Deadlines!

USC First year applicant deadlines!

If you are interested in going to USC (University of Southern California), here are some deadlines you should know about. The Common Application is now available for the 2013-2014 year.

• If you are a first-year applicant and want to be considered for scholarships through USC, the deadline is December 1, 2012

• First-year applicants for regular consideration (no scholarships) the deadline is January 10, 2013

• Transfer application deadline for regular and scholarship consideration, the deadline is February 1, 2013

EHS PTSA Scholarship Due Next Tuesday May 29, 2012

Deadline: Tuesday,  May 29, 2012

Applications for The EHS PTSA Scholarship are now here! This year they are planning to award five $200 scholarships this year so fill out an application!

Criteria:

1. Graduating Eureka High School senior
2. The applicant’s GPA must be at least 2.0.
3. Scholarship money must be used in the following academic year at a college, university, community college or trade school.
4. The applicant must submit a 150 to 200 word essay, consistent with the PTSA philosophy statement, describing their most rewarding experience during their high school years.
5. The application and essay should be neat with correct spelling, grammar and punctuation.
6. Application due in the counseling office by 4pm May 29, 2012.

 What to submit:

• Completed Application
• Official High School Transcript
• 150-200 word essay

Don't let this one slip by you! Applications are available in the Counseling office and are due the Tuesday we come back from Memorial Day weekend.

BigSun Organization Athletic Scholarships Apply Online!

The BigSun Organization is proud to be able to help young athletes succeed in their academic pursuits. In order to do our part we are offering an annual scholarship to a deserving student. All student athletes are eligible for this award, regardless of which sport they are participating in.

All student athletes are eligible regardless of the sport they are engaged in. The student must be a high school senior or be attending a post secondary institute.

Quota International of Eureka

Quota International of Eureka is offering a $500 scholarship to a graduating Eureka High School senior who demonstrates exceptional involvement and  outstanding leadership in the area of community service.

Criteria:

• Be a graduating Eureka High graduating senior
• Must have at least 100 hours of service within the last 12 months

What to submit:

1. Completed application
2. 300-500 word essay discussing your community service learning activities: What impact did they have on the community? What did you learn from these activities?
3. Current official transcript
4. Two letters of recommendation

Jacoby Creek Children's Education Foundation Scholarships

Deadline May, 18, 2012

The Jacoby Creek Children’s Education Foundation is offering three $500 merit scholarships that will be based on academic performance, GPA, school and community activities and other extracurricular activities.

Applications are now available in the counseling office.

What to submit:

·   Completed application

·   High school transcript

·   Verification by counselor of acceptance to desired school

On the application, elaborate on the items that show how you stand out both academically and personally and if you have provided extended service to Jacoby Creek School.

Acceptance Letters and Scholarships!

It is not too late to bring in  letters of acceptance you have received from colleges you've applied to! If you want them on the bulletin board, just bring them into the Counseling Office. Make sure to mark out any personal information you don't want to be made public! You can bring a copy or we can make a copy of your original for you.

Have you received notification that you have won a scholarship? We want to know about it! Each year we keep a list of students who receive scholarships and this year is no exception. Sanctuary Forest, Inc. Scholarship

There are five $1,000 awards available for this scholarship through Sanctuary Forest, Inc.

Sanctuary Forest, Inc, is a non-profit land trust located in Whitethorn, CA. It’s mission is to conserve the Mattole River watershed and surrounding areas for wildlife habitat and aesthetic, spiritual and intrinsic values in cooperation with our diverse community. They are committed to supporting the education of local young people to help build the future economic and environmental health of Humboldt and Mendocino Counties.

Qualifying Process:

1. Demonstrated Environmental Interest and Essay: Must have demonstrated an active interest in the environment through summer work in environmental-related activities, school projects or long-term personal interest in the environment. Must submit an essay outlining the student’s personal history of involvement with environmental issues and their plans and hopes for the future involvement/employment in environment-related activities.
2. Demonstrated Academic success.
3. Accepted to a two or four-year college-must submit proof of admission to qualify for the award.
4. Fill out application form to provide information on financial resources available.
5. Letter of recommendation by Principal, Teacher, Guidance Counselor or staff member printed on school letterhead stationary must be submitted with application
6. Current photo. Must email a current photo. If awarded a scholarship, photo may be used for press releases.
7. Completed applications must be reviewed and signed by your Principal or Counselor.

Cloverdale Lions Club: Jack Anthony Scholarship

The Cloverdale Lions Club is offering a new scholarship this year in memory of Jack Anthony, a Lions Club member. This will be a $1,000 scholarship.

The scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior attending public school in the Lions International I 4C2 District.

Qualifications:

·   Graduating high school senior attending public school in the Lions International I 4C2 District

·   Must reside in the Lions International I 4C2 District

·   Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0

·   Students planning to attend a 4-year college, community college or trade school are eligible to apply.

What to submit:

·   Completed application

Humboldt Association of Realtors Association Scholarship

Deadline: March 30, 2012

This scholarship just arrived today and copies are now available to pick up in the scholarship box in the Counseling Office.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Must complete an application and write an essay explaining your future plans and how they relate to the real estate industry
• Must be a student from Humboldt County who is enrolled or will be enrolled at a college or university.
• Field of study: professions that are centered on or support at career in real estate sales, real estate finance, real estate management, real estate appraisal, real estate investments, real estate economics, escrow/title, real estate law, interior decorating, construction technologies, landscaping, woodworking, cabinet making, architectural design, engineering and/or drafting.
• GPA of 3.0 or better
• One letter of recommendation
• Scholarship proceeds MUST be used for academic fees and/or academic supplies.

The deadline this year is Friday March 30, 2012.

California Alarm Association Youth Scholarship Program

Deadline March 31, 2012

This scholarship is offered to children of active duty law enforcement and fire service personnel in the State of California graduating from high school in 2012. There are 11 regional awards of $750, one statewide award of $1,750 and two national awards, first place $7,500 and Second place $2,500.

Eligibility criteria:

• Must be a graduating senior who will receive a diploma from a California accredited high school. 
• Must be accepted for admission to an accredited college or university
• Must have a parent or legal guardian who is full-time active duty employee, not on disability, member of a law enforcement agency or a full-time or volunteer member of a fire department located in California.

What to submit:

• Proof of enrollment in high school via an official high school transcript AND SAT/ACT scores
• Proof of acceptance to a college or university (letter is acceptable)
• Proof of parents/guardians occupations (ID or supervisory letter acceptable)
• Typed 500-700 word essay (subject of essay is on application)
• Letter of recommendation from teacher, counselor or other agency regarding extracurricular activities

How the awards are chosen:
1. GPA
2. SAT Scores (combined)
3. Essay
4. Extracurricular activities

U.S. Bank Internet Scholarship Program

Deadline March 31, 2012

At U.S. Bank, we know paying for college can be challenging, especially with the cost of college tuition increasing and student financial aid sources decreasing. Here's your opportunity to apply for one of 40 $1,000 scholarships.

In order to be eligible for the U.S. Bank Internet Scholarship Program, a student must be:

• A high school senior planning to enroll or a current college freshmen, sophomore or junior at an eligible four-year college or university participating in the U.S. Bank No Fee Education Loan Program;
• Enrolled by September 2012;
• A United States citizen or permanent resident alien.

Application Process:
