UC application Updates

Freshmen applicants:  If there are changes to a student’s academic record (if a student changes schools, adds or drops a course, or fails to earn a C or better in a course after submitting the application), the student must notify — by mail — the UC Application Center.  We encourage students to explain the reason(s) for the academic record updates in the letter. The letter must also include the student’s name, UC Application ID number and signature, and will be shared with all the campuses the student applied to. Mail to:

CSF Seniors: Glenn Michelson Memorial Award: $1,000 for 1,000 Words

Deadline: December 22, 2012

California Scholarship Federation has announced a brand new scholarship just for CSF members who are seniors. This is NOT the Seymour Memorial Award.

This scholarship is open to seniors who are CSF members and exemplify the CSF motto “Scholarship for Service”.

Rules:

·         All seniors who are members of an active chapter of CFS may apply

·         Limit of one entry per student

·         All entries must be submitted in English

·         All entries must be received by midnight on December 22, 2012

·         All entries become the property of the California Scholarship Federation

·         Failure to comply with these rules will result in disqualification

·         Essay of no more than 1,000 words must be typed and double spaced

Essay Prompt:

How has your involvement in your CSF chapter’s community service projects enhanced your personal growth?

What to submit:

1.    Completed 1,000 word essay

2.    Cover page which must include:

·         Student’s full name

·         High school graduation year

·         E-mail address

·         Phone number

·         Chapter adviser name: Audra Gosvener

3.    Submission MUST be received no later than midnight on December 22, 2012. Late submissions will not be accepted.

4.    Essays must be emailed as a Word attachment  to cfscjsf@socal.rr.com with Glenn Michelson Memorial Award in the subject line

5.    The winning essay will be selected by a committee compromised of California Scholarship Federation Board members.

Essays will be evaluated on the basis of the relevance to the prompt and quality of writing.

The winner will be notified by mid-February.

We Want Your Acceptance Letters and Emails!!!

The Counseling Office is creating a bulletin board to celebrate all our seniors who have received acceptance  letters or emails from colleges. If you've gotten a letter,  or letters or an email we'd like to have a copy to post on our board. (Some colleges are now notifying by email)

We already have a few but we know there are a lot more out there! We don't want to miss anyone! You can bring in the original and we will make copies or just bring us copies and we will put them on the board. Drop them off in the Counseling office so we can add them to the board.

This is a big accomplishment and we want to acknowledge all of your dedication and hard work.

This is the first step toward your future, let us celebrate with you...

Music Scholarship Now taking Applications

Deadline April 1, 2012

The Humboldt Harmonaires are now taking applications for their $1,000 scholarship! This is open to senior music students and the scholarship is awarded based on talent and need to a senior who will continue their musical education at a college or university.

You will need to submit an autobiographical essay describing  your musical interest and accomplishment whether instrumental or vocal and should include continuing and future musical plans. You will also be required to send a CD or DVD that is representative of your talent. You will need to submit your essay, letters of recommendation and your CD/DVD no later than April 1, 2012  to the following address:

Here is a timeline for students that lists things to be aware of in the upcoming months. This will be updated to include January-June as the information becomes available. Check back often to see what's coming up!

SENIOR TIMELINE

General Information

·Check dates for the SAT, SAT Subject and ACT Plus Writing tests. These tests are highly recommended to be taken in the spring of the junior year, and/or in the fall of the senior year. SATs or ACTs are required by most four-year colleges and universities, and should be completed no later than December of your senior year.

·    Visit the EHS College and Career Center in M108 for college catalogs, SAT/ACT study guides, financial aid info, etc.

September

·    Check with your counselor to make sure your classes meet high school graduation requirements, as well as college entrance requirements, and to complete your individual graduation credit check.

·    Keep informed by reading the daily bulletin, which is available online through your PowerSchool login. The bulletin is also posted outside the Information Office everyday.

·    Meet with Mrs. Jennifer Johnson to coordinate your Learning Pathways and Senior Project plans.

October

·    Applications for the University of California (www.ucop.edu/pathways) and the California State University (www.csumentor.edu) campuses are now available online.

·    Request, by phone or online, paper applications from other four-year colleges and universities, or apply online.

·    Register online at www.humboldt.edu/humboldt/aday to attend the HSU Fall Admissions Day on the HSU campus. Before the event, you must apply to HSU online at www.csumentor.edu by November 31, 2011.

·    Register online for SAT or ACT tests, and/or SAT Subject tests and ACT Plus Writing tests, if planning to attend a UC campus or specific private college.  Register at www.collegeboard.com and www.actstudent.org.

·    Write personal statement essays for the UCs and select private schools.

·    Check out www.assist.org to find out about a specific major, search for majors that interest you, or explore majors available at university campuses in California. This interactive site also provides course transfer information for students planning to transfer from a California community college to a UC or CSU.

·    Have your parents check the personnel office where they work to see if their employers offer scholarships. Also, check parents’/guardians’ unions, fraternal organizations, such as Elks, Moose Lodge, and churches, etc.

November

·    Nov. 31st is the application deadline for all UC (www.ucop.edu/pathways) and most CSU (www.csumentor.edu) university campuses. Be sure you have also applied for housing at the college of your choice.

·    Nov. 19th—LAST DAY for counselors to help students with four-year college applications before Thanksgiving Break.

·    If you are planning to attend HSU and were unable to attend Fall Admissions Day, see your counselor or call HSU Admissions Counselor Rhonda Geldin directly at 826-6213 for more information on Instant Admissions. It is not too late!

·    Plan to visit college and university campuses over the Thanksgiving break to help you decide on the best school for you.

·    Request FAFSA Personal Identification Number (PIN) number online at www.pin.ed.gov before filing FAFSA in January.

·    Apply to two or more four-year colleges due to impacted campuses or programs at certain colleges and universities.

·    Check out the local scholarship search sites at Humboldt Area Foundation, www.hafoundation.org, and the HSU site, www.humboldt.edu/banserv/finaid/schol.pl, as well as FREE national scholarship searches, such as www.finaid.org, www.fastweb.com, www.wiredscholar.com, www.ScholarshipExperts.com, and www.collegeboard.com.

·    Take the free ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) Test. To be announced; see your counselor if interested. The ASVAB is designed to help you learn more about yourself and the world of work, identify and explore potentially satisfying occupations, and develop an effective strategy to realize your goals. December

·    December 3^rd /December 11^th-Last opportunity to take the ACT Plus Writing, SAT Reasoning or SAT subject tests for most UC & CSU campuses.

·    Cash for College- Date to be announced.

·    To simplify the FAFSA online application process, first complete the FAFSA on the Web Worksheet (www.fafsa.ed.gov). Obtain financial aid forms from the Counseling Office (FAFSA & CSS- PROFILE-the financial aid application service of College Board).

·    Parents need to request their own PIN number online at www.pin.ed.gov in order to sign FAFSA electronically and check application progress online.

·    Go to www.fafsa4caster.ed.gov to determine EFC (Estimated Family Contribution) portion of college expenses. Online calculator tool assists families in financial planning for federal student aid.

·    Plan to visit college and university campuses over the holiday break to help you decide on the best school for you.

·    Begin looking for scholarships by exploring free scholarship search websites as well as checking out the Scholarship Box in the counseling office and this blog. See websites listings under “November.” 

Graduating seniors! PTA helps with money for college

Scholarship eligibility is just one benefit of membership in the PTA/PTSA

Applications for 2011 are due February 1

The California State PTA offers Graduating High School Senior Scholarships in the amount of $500 each to acknowledge the achievements of high school seniors for volunteer service in their schools and communities.

The scholarships are available for seniors graduating between Jan. 1 and June 30 of the current year from high schools in California that have a PTA or PTSA unit in good standing. To be eligible, students must be PTA members. The scholarship recognizes volunteer service and does not have a grade point average restriction or requirement.

Here's the scoop:

An application (including two reference forms) may be obtained from the California State PTA office or on the website at CAPTA. Reference forms are to be completed by a community volunteer leader with whom student applicant has served and a member of the high school faculty. Completed reference forms and letters should be given to the applicant in a sealed envelope to be included with application packet. Reference form and letter must be written specifically for this scholarship application. Copies of recommendation letters for college admission are NOT acceptable. Do not submit more than the requested two reference forms and letters. Reference forms and letters in sealed envelopes, a legible copy of applicant's current PTA/PTSA membership card on an 8-1/2 x 11 sheet of paper and completed application are to be mailed together in ONE envelope to the California State PTA. Application envelope must be received in the California State PTA office by close of business February 1. When February 1 falls on a weekend, application is due in the State PTA office by close of business on the following Monday. Postmarks will not be accepted. Application will not be considered if received after deadline date or if any of the required materials are missing. Application and reference forms with letters must be mailed; facsimiles will not be accepted. PTA memebership cards are available in the main office for a $5.00 fee.
