PG&E Scholarships Applications Are Open

Deadline February 1, 2013

PG&E has a wide variety of scholarships to offer ranging from the $1,000 to the $5,000. Check these out, there is probably one  you qualify for! (link at the bottom of the post)

Instructions

You need to please send a separate application package to each Employee Resource Group to which you are applying. Be sure to review the application supplements for each group to which you are applying, as there are additional requirements for each group. The applications and all supporting documents must be postmarked or e-mailed by Friday, February 1, 2013.

Required documents for a complete scholarship application packet:

q Completed and signed application form

q Essay(s) on the topic specified per the erg application supplement

q Copy of PG&E bill from within the last six months or other proof of residency in the PG&E service area

q Two (2) letters of recommendation from teachers, guidance counselors, coaches, community leaders, mentors, or work supervisors

Some of the ergs require additional documents. Be sure to review the erg application supplements for those requirements.

Applicants for the PrideNetwork scholarships should not complete this application. Instead, please go to www.equalityscholarship.org for a link to the online application.

Notes

u  You will be notified by April 12, 2013, of your scholarship application status and next steps (if applicable).

u  Scholarship recipients must attend an accredited school within the United States and provide a student ID number before any scholarship funds will be disbursed.

u  PG&E scholarships are mailed directly to recipients’ schools and may only be used for tuition, fees, books, and supplies. Checks are not sent directly to students nor their families.

California State University and University of California system applications are now open and due on November 30, 2012!

Your counselors will be available in the Navi Lab to help you complete and submit your applications on the following days and times.

Wednesday, November 7: 2nd, 3rd and 6th periods

Tuesday, November 13: 6th period

If you have any questions, don't have computer access at home or just want a counselor to look over your application before you send it in, stop by the Navi Lab (across the hall from the counseling office) and speak to a counselor during the listed times.

You can, of course, fill out a request to see your counselor any time and they will call you in to talk to you.

Don't let this deadline get by you as the deadlines are firm.

Gates Millennium Scholars Program Application Online

The Gates Millennium Scholars program will select 1,000 students each year to receive a good-through-graduation scholarship The goal of the GMA is to promote academic excellence and to provide an opportunity for outstanding minority students with significant financial need. This is a truly awesome opportunity to help fund your college education. 

Qualifications:

Students are eligible to be considered for a GMS scholarship if they meet all of the following criteria:

·         Are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native*, Asian Pacific Islander American** or Hispanic American

·         Are a citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the United States

·         Have attained a cumulative high school GPA of 3.3 on an unweighted 4.0 scale or have earned a GED

·         Will enroll for the first time at a U.S. located, accredited*** college or university (with the exception of students concurrently pursuing a high school diploma) in the fall of 2012 as a full-time, degree-seeking, first-year student. First-time college enrollees can also be GED recipients.

·         Have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular, or other activities

·         Meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria

·         Have completed and submitted all three required forms: the student’s application (Nominee Personal Information Form), an evaluation of the student’s academic record (Nominator Form) and an evaluation of the student’s community service and leadership activities(Recommender Form) by the deadline

A Complete Application Consists of:

1. Student Application (Nominee Personal Information Form)
2. Educator’s evaluation of the student’s academic record (Nominator Form)
3. Evaluation of the student’s community service and leadership activities (Recommender Form)

Gates Millennium Scholars

Using the SAT Website Wisely

The SAT website (collegeboard.org) is for more than just registering to take the SAT test! This website has several great resources that will help you prepare for the test.

Free Practice Tests

You can take a free full practice test and check your scores. Taking the online SAT Practice Test is a stress-free (and free) way to find your strengths and weaknesses on the SAT. You can test online, or you can print it out. Here is a link to that part of the site:

There is also a section that when you answer a few questions, will give you a study plan geared to your needs. This is a pretty comprehensive plan that covers the process from start to finish and gives lots of resources you can use to best prepare for the test. This is not just for students that have never taken the test before. Anyone can plug in their information and you will get a plan.

You can sign up for this and you will receive in your email an SAT Question of the Day. They send both math and English questions. You click on the answer you think is correct and it takes you to the website and lets you know if you are right or wrong. If you are wrong, try again! There are hints available too. This really a great resource and you get to see what kinds of questions that will be on the test.

SAT Skills Insight is a free tool to help you get a score that really shows your abilities. It identifies the types of skills that are tested on the SAT with sample test questions so that you can do your best if you're taking the SAT for the first time, or if you got your SAT scores and are thinking, "I want to do better than that.”

UC Application News and Updates

Some important news and information regarding applying to a University of California system school:

Apply now!

The application cycle is fully underway, and starting today, November 1^st, applicants can now submit their applications.  Students have until 11:59pm PST on November 30 to submit their application.  After the application is submitted, applicants can make changes to contact information, update self-reported test scores and complete application fee payments. 

SAT/ACT and other Tests

·         Students applying for fall 2013 admission must take the ACT or SAT by December 2012. Please have your students check remaining test dates and register for exams.

• SAT dates and deadlines:  http://sat.collegeboard.org/register  

    

• Applicants planning on taking or retaking SAT/ACT/SAT Subject Tests can list planned test dates on the application and submit their official scores by the end of December.
•  UC does not recommend that applicants use the College Board’s Score Choice function because it delays delivery of test scores. We strongly encourage students to report all scores and only use the highest score at a single sitting for admission consideration.
• UC only uses SAT subject tests, which are not required, as an additional piece of information as a part of the application.
• All official test (SAT/ACT/SAT Subject Tests) scores can be submitted to just one campus to which the student will be applying. Test scores will be disseminated to all campuses to which the student applied. 

Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate

·         AP/IB scores must be reported on the admission application. Official scores must be submitted by the testing agency, after acceptance of an offer of admission, to the one campus at which the student plans to enroll.

·         Although the College Board reports all AP tests results to the UC campus, students should be aware that AP test scores lower than 3 will not adversely affect their chances for admission, nor will IB Higher Level individual subject grades below 4.

TOEFL/IELTS

·         Applicants whose native language is not English and whose secondary/high school or college/university education was in a country where English is not the language of instruction must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination (academic modules).

·         Scores must be reported to the undergraduate admissions office at each campus to which the student applies and received no later than January 2013.

Official transcripts & Letters of Recommendation:

·         Transcripts:  Students must refer to transcripts as they fill out the application to ensure the information they enter is accurate. However, they must not submit transcripts at this point in the process. Transcripts must only be submitted to the one campus at which the student plans to enroll by the deadline date the campus will provide (unless specifically asked by a campus prior to the admission decision).

·         Letters of Recommendation:  Students must not submit letters of recommendation unless specifically asked by a campus. We do not encourage students to send letters of recommendation as part of the UC application process. However, some campuses/majors may require letters of recommendation as part of a supplemental application review, so please make sure you check for an email message from a campus.
