SAT Registration Deadline Reminder

Just a reminder that the deadline to register for the October 1, 2011 SAT test is September 9, 2011. By signing up before the deadline, you will save $26 in late fees that is added on top of the $49 registration fee.

If you are an AVID student or are on the free/reduced lunch program you may qualify for a fee waiver. Make sure you come in and get your fee waiver BEFORE you register online.

SAT Free Practice Test

Here is a link to the SAT website that will take you to a free full practice test. See what the test will be like and the kinds of questions they  might ask. This will not be what is on the test, but it will give you a good idea of what it may look like.

Check out the site as it has many other tools and tips to prepare for this important test. You can also register to take the test and see what the testing dates are as well.

Deadline for First SAT Test of the Year

The deadline for the October 1, 2011 SAT test is coming up. You must register by September 9, 2011 to avoid paying any late registration fees.

You need to register online for the SAT, go here to do so.

If you are an AVID student or qualify for Free or Reduced Lunch you may be eligible for a Fee Waiver. Stop by the Counseling office and ask about the fee waivers.

Bell Schedule for This Year (2011-2012)

We will have slightly different bell schedules this year. Here is the regular day bell schedule:

Zero Period           7:17-8:14
1st Period              8:20-9:17
2nd Period             9:23-10:20
Break                     10:20-10:30

4th Period              11:39-12:36
Lunch                      12:36-1:09
5th Period              1:15-2:12

Beginning on September 12 on every 2nd and 4th Monday, there will be an early release for students. The schedule for those days will be as follows:

4th Period             11:06-11:52

Your student can pick up copies of  of the revised schedules in the Counseling Office on the first day of school.

And don't forget, August 24, 2011, the first day of school will be a minimum day starting at 8:20 with dismissal at 12:30.

First Day of School Information

We hope you all had a wonderful, fun summer! The first day of school is fast approaching!

School begins at 8:20 on Wednesday, August 24, 2011! The first day will be a minimum day and students will be released at 12:40pm. Bus transportation home will be at the regular release time between 3:15pm and 3:45 pm so you may want to arrange for personal transportation home.

The Fall Sports parent information meeting is August 24. The meeting will take place at 7:00 pm and will be in the cafeteria.

Check your back to school information packet for information on Student Body Cards, Logger Cards, Athletic Passes, Yearbooks and more. Also included in the packet are PTSA membership, Eureka FFA Booster Club and EHS Athletic Booster Club forms.

We hope you are all ready for a great year at Eureka High! We are looking forward to having you back and making your experience here the best we can.

Horatio Alger Scholarship Accepting Applications

The applications for the Horatio Alger Scholarship Are now open. The deadline for submitting this application is October 30, 2011 (meaning it must be in the mail by October 30, 2011)

Eligibility:

The eligibility criteria to be considered for National Scholarships and Horatio Alger State Scholarship Programs are as follows:
  • enrollment full time as a high school senior, progressing normally toward graduation in the Spring/Summer 2012, with plans to enter college no later than the fall following graduation;
  • a strong commitment to pursuing and completing a bachelor's degree at an accredited institution located in the United States (students may start their studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution. critical financial need ($50,000 or less adjusted gross income per family is preferred, if higher explanation must be provided);
  • involvement in co-curricular and community activities;
  • demonstrated integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity
  • a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0; and
  • United States Citizenship.
What you need to turn in:

  • Certifications Form
    All applicants must complete the Academic Information section and Adversity section in order for the online Certification Form to be accessed by your counselor. A login will be emailed to your counselor and they will be required to complete the Certifications form online once these two sections are complete. (Please notify your counselor that they will receive an email from the Association providing instructions for how to complete the certifications form online).
  • High School Transcript
    All applicants must submit an official High School transcript. Applicants have the option to either upload the transcript through the application or send it via mail. Faxes/emails will not be accepted.
  • Letter of Support
    All applicants must have one Letter of Support. Students must provide the email address of the person filling out their letter of support. A login will then be emailed to this person. The letter must be filled out
    onlineFaxes/emails will not be accepted.
  • A copy of your parent/guardians federal tax return
    All applicants must provide a copy of the front page of your parent/guardian's 2010 individual federal tax return (1040, 1040A, 1040 EZ or 1099 SSA-Social Security Tax Form). If your parents/guardians were not required to file a tax return, include statement copies showing the amount of any government benefits, such as food stamps or Public Assistance documents. Faxes/emails will not be accepted.
  • Income Verification Cover Sheet
    All applicants are required to submit a cover sheet with their income verification information. Click

Farewell and Welcome!

As you may know, Carole Cox retired last year. We would like to say thank you for her many years of service and her commitment to our kids, our school and the community. We want to wish her a wonderful retirement and hope that she enjoys every second of it. She is already missed as she was a big part of our counseling team.

Now we want to welcome Delores Haskamp to our counseling team. She comes to us from Zane Middle School so some of you may already know her. Be sure to say  hello and welcome her to Eureka High School. We know she is going to be a big asset to our team!

First Scholarship of the year!

The Good Tidings Foundation is offering twenty $5,000 scholarships based on community service.

This application is due November 7, 2011 and the applications are available in the counseling office. You will need to mail in the following:
  • Application form
  • A single-sided, two page double-spaced essay describing your unique community service activities. It is recommended that you list all of your community service on the application and then focus on one project in your essay. Discuss any of the following subjects: What made you choose/create this project? How did you help the community: How many people were affected by your work? Why is community service important to you? What have you learned or gained from this work and do you plan to continue in the future?
  • A one-page letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor or Charity Director.

Schedules!

By now, your schedules should be arriving in the mail. In the envelope with the schedule, there is a page with all the information  you need if you have an issue with your schedule. Please read that letter as it will answer most questions you may have.

Sophomores, juniors and seniors: only schedule changes reflecting  your Navigator 4-year plan will be honored. If the change does not meet this criteria, you must go into Navigator and rework your 4-year plan AND have it approved by your counselor. Freshman can meet without making changes in Navigator.
Counselors will ONLY be addressing schedule gaps and changes made in Navigator. Other concerns can be addressed after school has started.

If you schedule looks good no action is needed.

To request a change that reflects your 4-year plan, please email your counselor now with your questions/requests as they are working on changes this week. The counselor case loads are according to your last name and are as follows:

First Day of School!!!

The first day of school (Wednesday, August 24th) is fast approaching. We are looking forward to seeing you all again and we want to say welcome to the incoming freshman and students who are new to our school.

Eureka High is an awesome school and we think you will enjoy your time here. And remember, if you have any questions, you can stop in at any of the offices and we will be happy to help you.

New Approaches for Studying for Tests

The CollegeBoard website has some tips and tricks for helping you prepare for the SAT tests but these will work for anything you need to study for. These take a different approach to studying than your typical strategies. It's worth looking at to help strengthen your test taking skills. New studying strategies

Also available on that website are practice tests and questions so that you can see what the tests are looking for. It's never to early to start preparing!

It's time to start thinking about the SAT tests.
