The Jacob Spencer Memorial Scholarship- New Deadline!

Due June 3, 2011

The Jacob Spencer Memorial Scholarship is a $500 award intended to go to a graduating Eureka High School senior planning to attend College of the Redwoods.

Criteria:
  • Eureka High school graduating senior
  • Minimum GPA 2.0
  • Attending College of the Redwoods
  • Financial need will be considered all things being equal
What to submit:
  1. Competed application
  2. Two letters of recommendation (use forms provided on application)
  3. Current high school transcript
The deadline for this scholarship has been extended until Friday, June 3, 2011. Stop by the counseling office and pick up an application today.


2011-2012 SAT Testing Information

The collegeboard.org website has just announced that registration for next year's SAT Testing will open on June 2, 2011. The testing dates have not been finalized yet but they do have tentative dates.

Eureka High Honors Night-Save the Date!

Don Wolski Memorial Scholarship Award

Due Friday, June 3, 2011

The Redwood Technology Consortium invites graduating seniors from Humboldt, Del Norte, Mendocino and Trinity County to apply for the $1,500 Don Wolski Memorial Scholarship.

Criteria:
  • Must be a 2011 graduating Humboldt, Del Norte, Mendocino or Trinity County high school senior who will attend an accredited institution of higher education in the 2011-2012 school year.
  • Submit a 500-800 word essay based on one of the stated topics
  • Two adult references and a brief letter from each attesting to your character
  • You must email your essay and letters as Microsoft Word documents or Adobe Acrobat PDF's to: scholarship@redwoodtech.org
This year's competition topics (choose one):
  1. What would be the best local ideas for utilizing the capabilities of technology and social media (Facebook/Twitter/Foursquare/Yelp/Groupon) to promote and stimulate the local economy
  2. What would be the best local ideas for utilizing the capabilities of technology and social media (Facebook/Twitter/Foursquare/Yelp/Groupon) for educational purposes?
Judging criteria:
  • Essays will be judged according to relevance to the topic, writing skills, clarity and creativity. Winner will be determined the following week and may be asked to read their essay at the Redwood Technology Consortium Luncheon (date TBD).

The Eureka High School PTSA Scholarship applications are due Friday, May 27, 2011!!

Criteria:
  • Minimum GPA 2.0
  • Scholarship money must be used the following academic year at a college, university , community college or trade school
  • Must submit a 150-200 word essay describing your most rewarding experience during your high school years consistent with the PTSA Philosophy Statement. (located on the application)
  • Your application and essay should be neat, with correct spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • You must be a member of the PTSA (Main Office has information about that)
  • Due in the counseling office by 3:30 pm on Friday, May 27, 2011
What to submit:
  1. Completed Application
  2. 150-200 word essay (remember, spelling, grammar and punctuation count!)

College of the Redwoods Orientation Workshop Information

Orientation for graduating high school seniors will be as follows:
May 17, May 19, May 25, and June 1.
10:00 a.m. to noon


Please have students register for the session they wish to attend by going to “Perspective Students,” then clicking on “In-Person Orientation”.  Additional information will be emailed to the students once they register for the session.

Registration workshops will begin June 20.  Registration workshops will be June 20, 21, 22, 23, 27, 28, 29 and on July 6, 7, 11 and 14.  Students will be encouraged to sign up for a registration workshop during orientation.

Jacob Spencer Memorial Scholarship

The Jacob Spencer Memorial Scholarship is geared towards seniors who are planning to pursue a vocational or technical field of study. Preference will be given to students who enroll in the College of the Redwoods Automotive Technology Program.

Criteria:
  • Minimum GPA of 2.0
  • Planning to pursue a vocational or technical field of study
  • Preference will be given to students who enroll in the College of the Redwoods Automotive Technology Program
What to submit:
  1. Completed application (available in the Counseling Office in the Scholarship Box
  2. Current official high school transcript
  3. 2 letters of recommendation using the sheets attached to the application. At least one should be from an EHS teacher

The California Scholarship Federation Life Member applications are now in the Counseling Office. This scholarship is open to Eureka High School graduating seniors who have achieved CSF Life Member status. There will be 3 scholarships awarded by CSF this year:

Tim Brownlow Memorial Scholarship

Due May 25, 2011

The Tim Brownlow Memorial Scholarship applications are due Wednesday May 25. Two $500 scholarships will be awarded to one male and one female graduating Eureka High senior.

Criteria:
  • 2.0 GPA
  • Strong commitment to education
  • Involvement in sports
  • Community service activities'
  • Must enroll and attend community college, four-year college or university, career/vocational program or even foreign exchange program.
  • All things being equal, financial need will be a consideration.
Submit the following:
  1. Current official High School transcript (NOT in a sealed envelope)
  2. Two letters of recommendation
  3. A list of extra-curricular/community service and sports activities you have participated in during high school
  4. Personal Statement: please include the following: Family background, your interests and educational and career goals. your need for financial assistance, financial need and employment history if any
  5. Write a 300 word or less essay describing your most rewarding experience in sports that has left an impact on you.
The deadline for this one is Wednesday May 25 (that's THIS Wednesday) by 3:30pm. We have very few applicants at this time so don't hesitate to come in and get an application from the scholarship box!

Buliding Balanced Men Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity Scholarship

Deadline June 21, 2011

Sigma Phi Epslion Fraternity is sponsoring a scholarship for men who are planning to attend Fresno State University. The Building Balanced Man Scholarship was created to recognize men who exemplify the qualities of Sound Mind and Sound Body. This is a $1,000 award.

This scholarship is for graduating senior men who will be attending Fresno State University. Applications are available in the Counseling Office scholarship box.


Brand New Scholarship Opportunity

Due Thursday May 26, 2011 by 3:30 pm


We have a brand new scholarship to offer honoring community service from the First Presbyterian Church of Eureka. 


Eligibility Criteria: 
  • Graduating Senior from Eureka High School
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Planning to attend and accepted to an accredited community college, college or university
  • Performed community service in the Eureka area.
What to submit:
  1. Completed application form
  2. One page essay describing your community service work, the effect your service had on  your life how community service will affect your life in college and how you see community service becoming a part of your life.
  3. Official High School transcript
  4. Two letters of recommendation: either two letters from you community service involvement or one from your community service and the other letter from someone of your choice
  5. List of Community Service work with dates of service.
Applications are available in the scholarship box located in the Counseling Office. This application is due in the Counseling Office  on Thursday, May 26, 2011 before 3:30pm.


Redwood Technology Consortium Don Wolski Memorial Scholarship

The Redwood Technology Consortium invites all graduating high school seniors to apply for the 2011 Don Wolski Memorial Scholarship award of $1,500.


To apply for the scholarship, applicants must submit a 500-800 word essay.


The topics for this year’s competition, of which applicants need only choose one, are:

CR Orientation Field Trip Students

If  you are going on the CR Orientation field trip, you will need to meet at the bus area at 9:15 on Monday May 23, 2011. If you haven't turned in your permission slip to the counseling office by the end of the day today (May 20), make sure to bring your signed permission slip with you. You will need it to have it in order to go on the field trip. Your teachers have been notified that you will be out of class from 9:15- 12:35.

Friday May 20, 2011 is a busy day for turning in scholarship applications! The following scholarships are due on May 20
  • Harold W. Adams Scholarship: based on high academic achievement, GPA 3.5 or better, financial need and involvement in extracurricular activities and community service
  • Orion Vance/Pettengill Family Memorial Scholarships: Eureka High graduating senior; 3.3 GPA or higher, involvement in extracurricular activities and community service.
  • John and Phyllis Craig Memorial Scholarship: GPA 2.0 or higher, must have overcome an obstacle or hardship in life such as a learning disability.
  • CSEA #88 Scholarship: Parent or guardian must be a member of CSEA Union Local #88, based on financial need and GPA of 2.0 or higher.
Applications for all of these scholarships are located in the Scholarship Box in the Counseling Office. You still have time to get these filled out and turned in. These are all local scholarships and we don't have a lot of applications for these so you have a good chance at this money.

Eureka High School Class of 1945 Scholarship deadline has been extended!!!

The deadline has been extended because we need more applicants! We need both boys and girls to apply but especially boys. Don't miss out on this $500 opportunity!!!

The Eureka High School Class of 1945 is offering two scholarships, one for a male student and one for a female student in the amount of $500. This is a one time, non-renewable scholarship. You must be attending College of the Redwoods and have a GPA of 2.5 or better.

Eligibility Criteria:
  • Graduating Senior from Eureka High School
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Must attend College of the Redwoods
  • Proof of enrollment will be required by the recipient in order to receive the scholarship.
To Apply Submit the Following:
  1. Completed application
  2. Personal statement, 1-2 pages in length answering the following questions: Why are you applying for this scholarship; what your goals are for the future and what is the most difficult experience you've had to overcome in your life so far?

American AgCredit Agribusiness Scholarship

Due on June 3, 2011
We have another scholarship available that is geared towards students active in FFA, 4-H or Grange. This is a $1,000 scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria:
  • Senior attending a high school in Humboldt, Del Norte, or South Western Trinity County
  • Currently involved in agriculture by being active in FFA, 4-H or Grange agricultural areas.
  • Planning to enroll in an agricultural or ag related major in the college of their choice
What to submit:
  1. Completed application packet
  2. Official high school transcript
  3. Three current letters of recommendation
  4. Any activity sheet, or list of clubs and activities you have been active in, any offices you have held, sports, choir, drama etc.

College of the Redwoods Orientation Day

On May 23, 2011 CR is sponsoring an Orientation Day just for Eureka High Seniors. They have invited 55 seniors to come on a first come first served basis. If you want to go, you need to come to the counseling office immediately and sign up.

The bus will leave at 9:30 am and return at 12:30 pm.
CR's orientation will consist of teaching you how to use CR technology (i.e. Web Advisor, MyCR, and CR email account), a Dean coming to speak about college expectations, and different student services programs to give you essential information about CR and your college experience there.

Once again, this is a first come first served opportunity so come into the counseling office and sign up. They cannot take more than 55 sign up and save  your spot.

Letters of Intent

Seniors! May 1st is the date you should have sent your letter of intent to the school you have chosen to attend. Please email a copy of your letter to your counselor or stop by the Counseling Office to let us know where you are going. We want to celebrate and to let others know where our students are headed! If you have any questions, stop in to see  your counselor.

SAT Test, Saturday May 7, 2011

SAT Test will be administered Saturday May 7, 2011 at the high school from 7:45am-1:00pm.

Registration deadline for the June 4, 2011, the  final SAT test to be given for this school year is Friday May 6, 2011.

Registration deadline for the June 11, 2011 ACT test is also Friday May 6, 2011.

If you are in AVID or on the free/reduced lunch program, you may be eligible for a fee waiver. Stop in the counseling office to pick one up.

Scholarship News: Scholarships coming due and we have no applications!

We have several LOCAL scholarships coming due in the next few weeks that we have not received one application for! This is money that will not be awarded if there are no applicants! Now is the time to apply, you could be the only one! Come into the Counseling Office and check out the scholarship box. There is money out there, don't let it slip away!

  • Khoua Vang has received the KFC Scholars award in the amount of $20,000
  • Kaitlyn Chorbi has received the Mason's of California scholarship award in the amount of $10,000 and the California Eastern Star award in the amount of $1,000
  • Xochitl Fregoso has received a $25,000 scholarship from the California College of the Arts.
It is so awesome to be able to share this news about our outstanding students! Keep up the good work, there are still many more dollars to be awarded. Stay tuned and we will keep you updated on more success stories! And if you win a scholarship, stop by and let us know!

CSEA #88 Scholarship Applications Available

Deadline May 20, 2011

If you have a parent that is in the California State Employees Association Chapter #88 and they work for Eureka City Schools, you may be eligible for a $250 Scholarship. The deadline is coming up fast so come in to the counseling office and pick up an application today.

Criteria:
  • Must be a graduating senior with a parent or guardian who is a member of CSEA Union Local #88
  • Financial need is considered
  • Minimum GPA of 2.0
What to turn in:
  1. Completed application
  2. 100-250 word essay describing your most rewarding experience during your high school years
  3. Cover letter describing yourself and your goals
  4. Current high school transcript
  5. One letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor employer, etc.
Turn your completed application packet in to the counseling office by 3:30 on Friday, May 20 2011
