THE COUNSELOR BLOG IS GETTING A NEW HOME!!!

As of February 16, 2013 we are getting a new home! We will now be hosted right on the Eureka City Schools Eureka High website!  This blog will remain here so that you can access any of the previously published information and there is a link on the new blog back to this one.


Here is how to find the new blog:

·         Go to www.eurekacityschools.org and choose Eureka High School under “Schools”
·         On the left side of the page you will find “Counseling”.
·         Roll your mouse over “Counseling”
·         Click on “EHS Counselor Blog”


There you will find this same blog but it will look a little different than what you are used to. There will be a list of postings and to see one, just click on the title.

We are excited about this new change and hope it makes this blog easier and more convenient for everyone to find and to use.

Coast Central Credit Union Scholarship Applications Due March 15, 2013

Coast Central Credit Union Coast Central Credit Union is now accepting applications for their scholarship. This is a $4,000 scholarship dispersed over a four-year period.

Qualifications:
·         You must be a graduating senior from a high school located in Humboldt, Del Norte or Trinity counties.
·         Must apply and be accepted to attend College of the Redwoods, Humboldt State University, Shasta Community College or Chico State University as a full-time student for the Fall 2012 semester
·         Must have a high school grade average of "C"  or better

Sewell Lufkin Memorial Scholarship Applications Are Here

Deadline: April 26, 2013

The Sewell Lufkin Memorial Scholarship is a $500 scholarship sponsored by The Scotia Band and is for students who are choosing to pursue their education in the field of music. Applications are available in the Counseling Office in the scholarship box.

Qualifications:
·         Graduate of a Humboldt County high school in 2013. Home schooling within Humboldt County does count
·         Planning to attend an accredited college or university and studying music
·         Be of good moral character
·         Intend to pursue a career in music upon graduating from college/university

What to submit:

·         Completed application form
·         Letter of recommendation addressed the Scotia Band Scholarship Committee
·         List of musical achievements: include names of groups participated in, awards received etc.

CSF Membership Applications for Spring 2013 Are Here!

Early deadline: Friday March 1, 2013- Dues $4.00
Final Deadline Friday March 22, 2013- Dues $5.00

Applications for CSF Membership are now available in the counseling office. You will need to turn in your completed application, a copy of your last semester’s grades and your dues to the finance office (March 1- $4.00 or March 22- $5.00). In order to take advantage of the savings on your dues, you must turn your information in to the Finance office by March 1, 2013.   

You must reapply every semester to remain a member in good standing and to be eligible for scholarship opportunities in your senior year.

If you have any questions, please see Ms. Clower in room M116. After February 25, you can check with Ms. Gosvener in the counseling office as well.

A to Z Eye Care Health Career Scholarship Applications Now Available

Deadline is April 15, 2013 (must be postmarked by this date)

A to Z Eye Care Health Career Scholarship

The A to Z Eye Care Health Career Scholarship is for a graduating senior from on of our Humboldt County High Schools. A total of two scholarships at $500 each, will be awarded. The students must be entering college or vocational school as a full-time student in Fall of 2013 with a major in a health care related field. Eligibility for this scholarship will be based on financial need and a minimum GPA requirement of 3.0 (based on cumulative GPA). Applications are now available in the Counseling Office scholarship box.


Applicants will be judged in an essay contest by answering the following questions:

1.     What health care field will you be studying?
2.     Why did you choose this field?
3.     What goals to you hope to achieve?
4.     How will this scholarship help you to achieve your goals?


Please attach a copy of your school transcripts to show you GPA.

Humboldt County Legal Professionals Association Scholarship Program

Eula Mae Jett Scholarship Deadline: April 1, 2013
Judge Harold E. Neville Scholarship Deadline: March 15, 2013
Donna Mullan Scholarship Deadline: March 15, 2013


The Humboldt County Legal Professionals Association is offering three scholarships.

The Eula Mae Jett Scholarship ($1,000) is due April 1, 2013 and is based on academic achievement and financial need for a student pursuing a course of study in court reporting, paralegal studies, legal secretary or assistant and legal reception. Local employment in the field is helpful but not necessary.


The Judge Harold E. Neville and Donna Mullan scholarships ($500) will be awarded based on the following criteria:
·         Applicant’s desire to further his or her education
·         The academic achievement of the applicant
·         The financial need of the applicant
·         Preference will be given to students enrolled in a legal studies program

Details for each of these scholarships are listed on the applications and applications are now
available in the counseling office in the Scholarship Box.

KFC Scholars Questions

I have had a few students stop by the counseling office and ask about the KFC Scholars program scholarship program so I did some research. Apparently the KFC Foundation is in the process of reviewing the Scholarship program so it is currently unavailable. Please see the screen grab below from their website. Keep checking back with them in case they open it up again.

Supports high school seniors with entrepreneurial drive, strong perseverance, demonstrated financial need and who want to pursue a college education at an accredited public institution in the state they reside.
The KFC Foundation is currently reviewing the KFC Colonel's Scholars Scholarship program. Since 2006 we have proudly awarded over $10 Million to students with financial need and entrepreneurial spirit. Due to the timing of this review the application will not open on December 1st as planned. We hope to announce the plans for the KFC Colonel's Scholars Scholarship soon.

2013 Cabrillo Civic Clubs of California Scholarship Aopplications Now Available!

2013 Cabrillo Civic Clubs of California Scholarships

DEADLINE: MARCH 15, 2013

Scholarship for college bound students of Portuguese descent.
Application and supporting data must be submitted in one package directly to the State Council Club Scholarship Chairman between January 1st and March 15, 2013.

Eligibility requirements:
  1. Students must be of Portuguese descent on father or mother’s side and be a USA citizen or permanent resident
  2. 3.50 grade point average (grades 9-12) and be graduating from a California high school. Transcript of grade records MUST accompany application.
  3. Meet all requirements set down my an accredited university or college of the student’s choice.
  4. Participated in at least three extra-curricular activities while in high school.
  5. Three letters of recommendation: 1 from the principal, dean or Counselor verifying participation in extra-curricular activities; 1 from a teacher at the high school attended; 1 from any other source except a relative.

ALL DOCUMENTS MUST BE SUBMITTED IN ONE PACKAGE IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP.

UIHS H.D. "Timm" Williams Memorial Indian Scholarship

Deadline: April 5, 2013

April 5, 2013 is the deadline for the UIHS H.D. "Timm" Williams Memorial Indian Scholarship. 

The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage more American Indian students to pursue health careers. Here are a list of qualifications for this scholarship:
  • An American Indian student (or their parents or guardians) registered for services at United Indian Health Services
  • Graduating senior from a Humboldt, Del Norte County High School or Charter school in 2013
  • Planning to attend a two year or four year college/university in the academic year 2013-2014
  • Have an overall GPA of 2.0 or better.
Other considerations will be: outside activities/interests, community involvement, and commitment to and participation in working with American Indian people.

There are a wide variety of majors from Anthropology to Women's Studies that will qualify you for this and they are listed on the back of the application. Come in to the counseling office to pick up an application today.

Cal Grant GPA Information Release forms due Feb. 1, 2013

Don't forget to turn your Cal Grant GPA Information Relese Form to the Counseling Office by Friday February 1, 2013 so you information can be released for you to receive financial aid for college.

These forms were mailed home to you from the counseling office  with the financial aid information. If you lost your form, you can come in and pick up another one from the counseling office. It must be signed by both you AND your parents.

Online Applications Now Available for the 2013 California State PTA Graduating High School Senior Scholarships

Deadline: Close of business February 1, 2013

New this year is an online application for the Sate PTSA Scholarship! You will need to have  your membership card handy as you will need this information when you fill out the application. If you don't have a chance to come to the counseling office to pick up a paper application, now you can apply online!

The California State PTA Graduating High School Senior Scholarships applications are now available in the counseling office!  (This is the California State PTA not the EHS PTSA) This scholarship recognizes volunteer service in the school and community and does not have a GPA requirement. The scholarship is for $500.

Qualifications:
·         California resident
·         Graduating from a high school in California with a PTA/PTSA unit in good standing
·         Be a member of his/her high school PTA/PTSA and include a copy of your current membership card with your application

What to submit:
1.    Completed application
2.    Legible copy if your PTA/PTSA membership card on an 8 ½” x 11” sheet of paper
3.    An essay describing:
·         Any PTA/PTSA responsibility you may have
·         Your career plans, goals and other information you feel would be valuable to the selection committee
·         All school service related activities including any service you provide to others at school. Do not use abbreviations for any organization listed, spell them out completely
·         Your volunteer service in the community (non-school related service)
4.    Reference forms and letters in sealed envelopes
·         Reference form and letter written specifically for this scholarship
·         First reference form and letter completed by a community volunteer leader with whom student applicant has served; not related to student
·         Second reference form and letter completed by a high school faculty member
·         Copies of recommendation letters for college admission are NOT acceptable
·         NOTE: each completed reference form and letter must be given to the applicant in a separate sealed envelope.

Mail your completed packet in one envelope. All submissions must be received in the California State PTA office by the close of business Friday, February 1, 2013. Faxed submissions will not be accepted.

You can pick up application forms for the scholarship in the counseling office. PTSA/PTA registration forms were mailed home in the beginning of the year packet but are also available in the Finance office.

PG&E has a wide variety of scholarships to offer ranging from the $1,000 to the $5,000. Check these out, there is probably one  you qualify for! (link at the bottom of the post)

Instructions

You need to please send a separate application package to each Employee Resource Group to which you are applying. Be sure to review the application supplements for each group to which you are applying, as there are additional requirements for each group. The applications and all supporting documents must be postmarked or e-mailed by Friday, February 1, 2013.

Required documents for a complete scholarship application packet:
q Completed and signed application form
q Essay(s) on the topic specified per the erg application supplement
q Copy of PG&E bill from within the last six months or other proof of residency in the PG&E service area
q Two (2) letters of recommendation from teachers, guidance counselors, coaches, community leaders, mentors, or work supervisors

Some of the ergs require additional documents. Be sure to review the erg application supplements for those requirements.

Applicants for the PrideNetwork scholarships should not complete this application. Instead, please go to www.equalityscholarship.org for a link to the online application.

u  Scholarship recipients must attend an accredited school within the United States and provide a student ID number before any scholarship funds will be disbursed.
u  PG&E scholarships are mailed directly to recipients’ schools and may only be used for tuition, fees, books, and supplies. Checks are not sent directly to students nor their families.
