The Don and Roy Splawn Charitable Foundation West Scholarship Grant Program Now Accepting Applications

Please note that we encourage students to apply that have extraordinary circumstances in their lives as well as students who may not have the chance to attend college without financial assistance.

Previous recipients of the Splawn Scholarship have a chance to renew the scholarship once yearly while they are in college. Renewals take place in the Fall of every year.

The scholarship is worth up to $1000.00 per student.

Cal Grant GPA Information Release forms due Feb. 1, 2013

Don't forget to turn your Cal Grant GPA Information Relese Form to the Counseling Office by Friday February 1, 2013 so you information can be released for you to receive financial aid for college.

These forms were mailed home to you from the counseling office  with the financial aid information. If you lost your form, you can come in and pick up another one from the counseling office. It must be signed by both you AND your parents.

Online Applications Now Available for the 2013 California State PTA Graduating High School Senior Scholarships

Deadline: Close of business February 1, 2013

New this year is an online application for the Sate PTSA Scholarship! You will need to have  your membership card handy as you will need this information when you fill out the application. If you don't have a chance to come to the counseling office to pick up a paper application, now you can apply online!

The California State PTA Graduating High School Senior Scholarships applications are now available in the counseling office!  (This is the California State PTA not the EHS PTSA) This scholarship recognizes volunteer service in the school and community and does not have a GPA requirement. The scholarship is for $500.

Qualifications:
·         California resident
·         Graduating from a high school in California with a PTA/PTSA unit in good standing
·         Be a member of his/her high school PTA/PTSA and include a copy of your current membership card with your application

What to submit:
1.    Completed application
2.    Legible copy if your PTA/PTSA membership card on an 8 ½” x 11” sheet of paper
3.    An essay describing:
·         Any PTA/PTSA responsibility you may have
·         Your career plans, goals and other information you feel would be valuable to the selection committee
·         All school service related activities including any service you provide to others at school. Do not use abbreviations for any organization listed, spell them out completely
·         Your volunteer service in the community (non-school related service)
4.    Reference forms and letters in sealed envelopes
·         Reference form and letter written specifically for this scholarship
·         First reference form and letter completed by a community volunteer leader with whom student applicant has served; not related to student
·         Second reference form and letter completed by a high school faculty member
·         Copies of recommendation letters for college admission are NOT acceptable
·         NOTE: each completed reference form and letter must be given to the applicant in a separate sealed envelope.

Mail your completed packet in one envelope. All submissions must be received in the California State PTA office by the close of business Friday, February 1, 2013. Faxed submissions will not be accepted.

You can pick up application forms for the scholarship in the counseling office. PTSA/PTA registration forms were mailed home in the beginning of the year packet but are also available in the Finance office.

Important Update for PG& E Scholarships

PG&E has a wide variety of scholarships to offer ranging from the $1,000 to the $5,000. Check these out, there is probably one  you qualify for! (link at the bottom of the post)

Instructions

You need to please send a separate application package to each Employee Resource Group to which you are applying. Be sure to review the application supplements for each group to which you are applying, as there are additional requirements for each group. The applications and all supporting documents must be postmarked or e-mailed by Friday, February 1, 2013.

Required documents for a complete scholarship application packet:
q Completed and signed application form
q Essay(s) on the topic specified per the erg application supplement
q Copy of PG&E bill from within the last six months or other proof of residency in the PG&E service area
q Two (2) letters of recommendation from teachers, guidance counselors, coaches, community leaders, mentors, or work supervisors

Some of the ergs require additional documents. Be sure to review the erg application supplements for those requirements.

Applicants for the PrideNetwork scholarships should not complete this application. Instead, please go to www.equalityscholarship.org for a link to the online application.

California Women in Timber North Coast Chapter 2013 Memorial Scholarship

Deadline: March 25, 2013

This is open to men and women!

The North Coast Chapter of California Women in Timber is offering several scholarships to students pursuing a career in the Forest Product Industry OR have immediate family involved in the Forest Products Industry.

Qualifications:

Scholarships are open to all courses of study, however, students pursuing a career in natural resources of forestry or students whose family are or were employed in the forest products industry.

Scholarship amounts will vary between $250 and $1,000 depending on number of qualified applicants.

Criteria:
1.    Minimum GPA of 2.5
2.    Graduate of a Humboldt or Del Norte county high school
3.    Planning to pursue a career in the Forest Products Industry or have immediate family involved in the forest products industry will be given preference.

What you need to submit:
·         Completed California Women in Timber Scholarship application
·         A cover letter
·         An unofficial copy of your most recent transcript
·         Two letters of recommendation
·         SAT or ACT Scores- usually on your transcript

EHS sent out a mailing with important information about financial aid including information about the Cash for College Workshop.

It also contains a GPA release form that must be filled out and signed by students and parents allowing GPA information to be released to the California Student Aid Commission to be used in the Cal Grant applications. Please read the information carefully! Be sure to turn in your Cal Grant GPA Information Release Form by February 1, 2013.

What is the Cash for College Workshop? It is a workshop that is presented by Humboldt County Office of Education Decade of Difference in partnership with Humboldt State University Financial Aid Department Staff to help students and parents get through the FAFSA application process and get other important financial aid information.

This is an opportunity to fill out your FAFSA online with financial aid professionals on hand to answer questions that may come up as you fill out the application. Please read the flyer enclosed in the packet that has been mailed home for more details and specifics about what you need to bring to the workshop.

There is also a $1,000 scholarship opportunity to all seniors who attend the Cash for College workshop, complete an exit survey, submit the FAFSA and apply for a Cal Grant by March 2, 2013.

Don’t miss out on this very important opportunity to have your FAFSA questions answered by the professionals, and a chance to win a $1,000 scholarship as well!

Schedule Changes for Spring Semester 2013:

 Schedule changes are only for academic reasons.  Student initiated schedule changes will be by petition only for the first week of school (through Friday, Feb. 1, 2013).

Teacher initiated schedule changes will be by petition through the second week of school (Friday, Feb.8, 2013).

If you need to change your schedule for an academic reason, come in on Monday (January 28, 2013) and fill out a request to see your counselor form.

Schedule changes requests  for Spring Semester 2013 will not be accepted from students after Friday, February 1, 2013

Eureka Emblem Club #298 Scholarship Applications Are Here!

Deadline: Postmarked no later than March 1, 2013

The Eureka Emblem Club #298 is once again offering a total of four $1,000 scholarships this year. There will be three from the Emblem Club and one from the Barbara Payne Memorial Fund.

You will need to submit the application and write an application letter describing why a college education is important you and what your present career goals are. You will also need two letters of recommendation with at least one being from a current teacher and a copy of your transcript.

Applications are available now in the counseling office in the scholarship box.

Scholarships Due February 1, 2013

Scholarship season is upon us! Now is the time that we really begin getting a lot of scholarship notifications in the Counseling Office, usually a few each week. Make sure that you start coming by and checking the Scholarship Box regularly so that you can get a good start on your applications. The blog is an excellent source of this information as it is updated daily during this busy time.

We have several scholarships that are due Friday February 1, 2013:

  • Equality Scholarship
  • PG&E Scholarship program
  • Soroptimist International Distinguished Youth Scholarship
  • Beverage Industry/Christermon Scholarship
  • There is also a Student Speaking Contest sponsored by Lions Multiple District 4 that is due on February 1, 2013.
Applications and information for all of these scholarships can be found in the Counseling Office in the Scholarship Box. Stop by soon and pick you your application. There is a lot of money out there that is available for high school seniors. You just have to go out there and apply for it!
All of these scholarships have also been featured here on the blog so you do a search for them to get more details. Otherwise, come into the Counseling Office and look in the Scholarship Box. It’s not too early to get started!

Humboldt Area Foundation

Deadline March 15, 2013

The Humboldt Area Foundation Scholarship page is now live! This is the largest source of local scholarships and you only have to fill out one application to apply for them all! The application is available online. There has been money that has not been awarded in the past because no one has applied! Don’t miss out on money to help you get to college and get your education. Around the first week in February, counselors will take classes into the Navi Lab and will have a specialist from the Humboldt Area Foundation here to answer questions. Cash for College Workshop and Financial Aid Information

2013 Beverage Industry College Scholarship Program Applications Due Postmarked Feb. 1, 2013

Deadline: Must be postmarked by February 1, 2013

The licensed California Beverage Industry offers college scholarships in amounts from $2,000 to $5,000 to qualified graduating high school seniors who will attend an accredited four-year college or university based within the United States, beginning with the fall 2013 semester. Students planning to attend a two-year community college are ineligible for this program.

Scholarships will be awarded to children, grandchildren, or legal guardians, of persons who currently hold full-time employment with, or who are proprietor of, a company holding a valid California liquor, beer or wine license. This includes restaurants, hotels, retail & wholesale grocery establishments, airlines, breweries, wineries, distributors, etc.

*Student employment with an establishment holding a California liquor license, and/or eligibility established through family relationship other than parent/grandparent/legal guardian, does not qualify for application to this program.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Student establishes eligibility through parent, grandparent, or legal guardian's full-time employment as outlined above.
  • Student demonstrates outstanding community service as evidenced by a student-written essay.
  • Scholarship recipients will be honored at one of two gala awards ceremonies planned for Summer 2013. Attendance at the awards ceremony is prerequisite to receiving the scholarship.
All applicants winning scholarships will receive notification of their placement for the program by June, 2013.

For the application to be considered, all directions on the application must be followed exactly with attention to deadlines.

SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS:

   HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS
  • Upon high school graduation, student will attend an accredited four-year college or university within the United States, beginning with the Fall 2013 term/semester and enrollment status of freshman/full-time (12+ units).
  • Students participates in specific extra-curricular high school activities, as defined on application.
  • Include with your application a 8.5 x 11 typed, double spaced ESSAY (not to exceed 2 pages) instructions below:
  • "Include with your application a two page essay. Specific instructions will be given after you complete the application worksheet and click Generate my Application. You must include this 8.5 x 11 typed, doubled spaced essay that cannot exceed 2 pages. This essay will be closely evaluated for your on-topic submission, your attention to page setup and will account for 50% of the application process. It will be edited for impartiality and submitted for evaluation to a panel of twenty individuals. Essays will be critically evaluated for addressing the prompt. You will receive the prompts once you 'GENERATE THE APPLICATION'"

PLEASE NOTE: YOUR WELL-WRITTEN ESSAY, CLOSELY FOLLOWING THE REQUESTED PROMPT, WILL COUNT FOR 50% OF THE APPLICATION PROCESS.

Grange Co-op’s Rogue Scholarship Due February 15, 2013

Are you a senior active in FFA, 4-H, DECA, FBLA, Horticulture or Student Body Leadership??? This could be a great opportunity for you. The Rogue Scholarship will award twelve $500 and one $1,500 scholarships. Check out the information below and see if you can qualify for this scholarship!

Distinguished Youth Scholarship Due February 1, 2013

The Distinguished Youth Scholarship is given in recognition of outstanding contributions made by young people to home, school, and the world.

Eligibility requirements:

·         Graduating senior of any Eureka high school, Charter school, Community school and not turning 21 before 6-30-2013
·         Have taken  an active part in service in the home, school and/or community
·         Show a high degree of cooperation, courtesy, and consideration for others
·         Have demonstrated the ability to lead with self-control, dignity and responsibility
·         Have pursued your goals with commitment and purpose
·         Soroptomists  and their families are not eligible for this scholarship
