Top Tips From College Admissions Officers.

Here is an excellent article with tips from College Admissions Officers on how to stand out from the applicant pool.

Here is an example of the type of information  you will find in this article:

"Lose the silly email address!
"Very often we come across students with fantastic grades, test scores and extracurricular activities, and then notice that they have an email address that's completely inappropriate," says Winter. "That tends to communicate a bit about who they are." He advises that students avoid this by registering for a very standard email address — first name, last name, etc. — and using that for all college-related correspondences. In the same vein, encourage your teen to clean up her Facebook and Twitter accounts — colleges often check them out to get a better sense of what each applicant is like."

And by the way, employers are checking your Facebook and Twitter too.

Applications sites have been known to crash on the final day of the application window, so keep vigil!
There are LOTS of resources for help writing your personal statements, and any other questions you may have about college application processes. The UC has its own YouTube channel, and has lists of videos meant to help you and your family make college admissions as easy as possible. The CSU’s allow a student to choose their best English and Math scores of any test session. Seniors in the Navi lab: The Navi Lab has moved this year-right across the hall from the Counseling Department. We are excited to meet with seniors in the lab this fall to assist with the college applications and planning process!
JUNIORS:
Wednesday, September 28, 2011 is the Humboldt Del-Norte College Night from 5pm to 8 pm at Eureka High. This is an exceptional night to meet college reps for colleges from coast to coast. Now is the time to begin thinking about colleges that are right for you. You will be able to talk to reps about campus life, college majors, their college culture, and what it’s like to be a student at their university! Look for the flyers in the classrooms and halls, YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS IT!
Juniors, keep your focus! Sophomore and Junior years are the years that universities will focus on when you apply to colleges in the fall of your senior year. Keep your goals in mind at all times! Write your goals on a sticky note and post it somewhere where you will see it every day to remind yourself what you’re working for hard each day.
Juniors in the Navi Lab: Juniors will continue the development of their E-Portfolios in the Navi Lab, which are great tools for job and college applications. We will continue to explore career options as well. We can’t wait to hear about the summer jobs each of you got with the help of your E-Portfolios!
FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORES:
We welcome you to attend College Night on September 28th. This is an excellent way to begin informing yourself about universities that pique your interest, and to continue thinking about your post-high school goals. Many students attend College Night and talk to reps for schools that they previously had no idea existed. Often, students learn that there are colleges which are uniquely best fit for them. This is the place to make those connections and to ask your questions!
Freshmen and Sophomores in the Navi lab: Freshmen will be working on the development of their 4-year plan in the labs this fall, and sophomores will be updating their 4-year plans. Sophomores will continue to develop their E-Portfolios and explore college and career options for their future.
Freshmen and sophomores, take advantage of the Eureka High School learning pathways, which offer an opportunity for you to explore a particular area of interest and develop job skills. The pathways are a great way to become well-informed in your area of interest, and they look great on your resumes and E-portfolios. Students who complete a learning pathway also receive an honorary cord to wear for high school graduation. Eureka High School offers a wide variety of courses to support career exploration. You can locate detailed information on course offerings and learning pathways at: http://www2.eurekacityschools.org/ehs/learningpathways/.
EVERYONE:
We are very excited to be back in action with our awesome Eureka High Students. We are here to help you make a plan for your adult life, and to help you reach it! Remember, nothing comes to you without a little hard work! So, keep your eye on the prize and remind yourself why you WANT to work hard each day!

Fall 2011 CSF Applilcations

Deadline: October 28, 2011

The applications for the Fall Semester 2011 CSF membership are now available in the Counseling office!

Come in and get an application today. You will need to turn in your completed application, a copy of last semester's grades and $4.00 no later than Friday October 28, 2011.

Here is more comprehensive information about CSF and what it means to be a member:

What is CSF?

CSF stands for California Scholarship Federation. It is an academic honors society for active and academically minded students. Being a member of CSF looks great on college applications, gets you special recognition at graduation, and can provide scholarships to active members.

Cool. How do I join?
At the beginning of every semester, you can pick up an application from the counseling office. Freshmen students are invited to apply beginning the second semester of their freshman year. Once the application is completed, turn it in to the finance office with $4.

Uh-oh, an application. Does that mean it’s hard to get in?
Students are admitted into CSF solely based on their semester grades. While some students find it difficult to get a high enough GPA, others have no trouble. But don’t worry—if you think CSF is right for you, then you probably are the type of person who won’t have too much trouble getting in.

What do I have to do to be a member? Do I have to do work?
No, you do not have to work if you’re a CSF member. In fact, you don’t have to do anything at all if you don’t want to. If you are interested in becoming involved in the community and earning community service hours, you should join CSF Club. CSF Club raises money through bake sales, staff car washes, movie nights, and other events that go to provide scholarships to graduating seniors who have achieved Sealbearer status and have demonstrated excellence in the areas of academics and community service.

What does it mean to be a “Sealbearer/Life Member” and what do I have to do?
Life Membership (Sealbearer) is achieved by qualifying for chapter membership for four or more semesters in the last three years of high school, and earns the CSF gold Seal on diplomas and transcripts. Grades in 9th grade are for status as an associate member before they can become an actual CSF member in the 10th-12th grades.  Becoming an associate member allows students to say they were a 4 year member of CSF which is important when applying to colleges and for scholarships. At graduation, Sealbearers are recognized and receive a gold stole, a CSF pin, and a certificate.

I have more questions. Who do I talk to?
Most questions can be answered by Audra Gosvener who can be found in the counseling office. Of course, you can also talk to CSF members or the CSF Club officers.

CSF Club Officers:
September 2011-June 2012
President: Hannah Ulansey
Vice President: Siera Kaup
Treasurer: Maya Kaup
Secretary: Riann Thayer
