California Wine Grape Growers Foundation Scholarship

Deadline: Monday, April 2, 2012


The California Wine Grape Growers Foundation are offering two types of scholarships.

There will be at least two $8,000 scholarships for four years at any campus in the University of California or California State University system.

At least four $2,000 scholarships for two years at any California community college

Criteria:
  • Must have a parent or guardian that worked during the 2011-2012 wine grape growing season
  • Must be a high school senior graduating in 2012
  • Must be enrolled for 12 or more units per semester with satisfactory grades.


What to submit:

  1. Completed application
  2. Official high school transcripts
  3. SAT or ACT results (On your transcript)
  4. Letter of recommendation from an instructor, school principal or your counselor
  5. 500 word autobiographical essay about you, your career goals, future plans to help your community. (There are suggestions listed on the application)

Applications must be postmarked no later than April 2, 2012.

Seniors! We Want Your College Acceptance Letters!!!

The Counseling Office has put up a bulletin board in the hall and needs your college acceptance letters! We are celebrating and showcasing our seniors who have received acceptance letters from the colleges you've applied to. It doesn't have to only be from the college you have decided to attend, we would like to have any and all letters to display on our board.

We want to show your fellow students, teachers, administrators and staff to know how proud we are of our students. Your letters can be an inspiration to the other students in the school to keep working hard to achieve their goals.

If you have acceptance letters, bring in a copy (or the original and we will make a copy for the board) and we will add it to the growing collection on the board!

Congratulations seniors! This is the first step toward your future!

Friel Family Scholarship Applications Now Available

Deadline: April 15, 2012

The Howard Friel Family Scholarship is being offered by Howard Friel, who is a retired math teacher and coach for Eureka City Schools for many years. While Mr. Friel was a math teacher, he felt English was the most important subject. This award is for $300 and will go to a Eureka High graduating senior who is planning to study English.

Eligibility Criteria:
  • Eureka High School graduating senior
  • Planning to attend a college or university in California
  • Planning to major in English
  • Can be a full or part-time student
  • GPA is not considered
  • Preference will be given to students who play an instrument or sings
What to submit:
  1. Completed application form
  2. 1-2 page personal statement
  3. Official transcript
  4. Two letters of recommendation

Service Learning Hours Deadline

Deadline: May 25, 2012

Freshman! Sophomores! Juniors! Seniors!

Don't wait until the last minute to turn in your completed service learning hours forms! You should be turning the forms in to the Athletic Secretary (or the Main Office if she is not there) as soon as they are filled out. Service learning hours are an important part of the scholarship and the college admissions process. Get them in early so they can be recorded in a timely manner!

May seems like a long ways away but it will be here before you know it!

You can pick up your service learning hours forms either in the Counseling Office or in the Athletic Office in the main building.

Ralph E. Bumpus Memorial Scholarship Due April 15

Deadline April 15, 2012

The family of Ralph E. Bumpus is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a Eureka High School graduating senior who is planning to continue their education in the field of automotive technology. In the past, preference has been given to students who will attend the College of the Redwoods Automotive Technology Program.

Eligibility Criteria:
  • Must be a Eureka High graduating senior
  • Minimum GPA 2.0
  • Pursuing a degree or certificate in the area of automotive technology
  • Must attend an accredited college or vocational/career technical program
  • All things being equal, financial need will be considered
What to submit:
  1. Completed application form
  2. 1-2 page personal statement
  3. Your official transcript
  4. Two letters of recommendation

Seven University of California On-line Open Houses Next week!

Once again CollegeWeekLive is hosting a series of on-line open houses, this time for the University of California system.

The first one is scheduled to happen today from 11:30 am -6:30 pm for UC Santa Barbara and will cover topics from first year experiences to financial aid.

More CR Placement Test Dates Open for Spring Break

College of the Redwoods has announced the addition of two more testing dates during EHS Spring Break to allow students to go and take their placement tests.

Remember, before you can register for classes at College of the Redwoods, you must have taken the placement tests. If you are signed up to go to Redwood Days on  May 16, 2012 to register for classes, you MUST have enrolled in CR and taken the placement tests.

Native Sons of the Golden West Scholarship

Deadline April 5, 2012

The Native Sons of the Golden West are offering a scholarship in the amount of $300. This scholarship is open to any EHS graduating senior.

Applications are available in the Counseling Office. 

What to submit:
  • Completed application
  • Copy of your current high school transcript
  • 300-500 word essay explaining how you can help create an awareness of California's past and the direction you think it is heading for the 21st Century.
Submit your application and other documents to the Eureka High Counseling Office no later than 3:30pm on Thursday, April 5, 2012. Get this one completed and turned in before Spring Break!


Justin Keele Make a Difference Award Due Sunday, April 1, 2012

Deadline April 1, 2012

The Justin Keele Grant is for students at Eureka High School or Zoe Barnum who want to lend a hand. The annual grant of $200 to $2000 is meant to help a deserving individual or group achieve their goals, aspirations, dreams or relief of hardship.

If you have a group, cause or individual in need of assistance and a clear plan of how you will do so, this grant is for you! The grant is intended to help provide tools of all kinds in order for you to help them achieve their goal. Projects which help homeless youth are given preference.

If you want to hold a fundraiser for a group like Betty's Blue Angels or the Homeless Education Project, and coordinate the event, you will be eligible to receive money to help pay for the event. Do you know of an individual or a family who could use a little help, you may be eligible to receive a grant to purchase clothing for school

The idea of this grant is to "Pay It Forward" which means you do a "favor" for someone and instead of them "paying" you back, you do a "favor" for someone else thus paying it forward. It is a great way to help your community and start a chain of giving that will grow and help more and more people. This really can make a difference! And it feels great to volunteer!

Applications and information are available in the office. Come on in and get started on making a difference in your community and ultimately, in the world.

The Humboldt Harmonaires Barbershop Chorus is offering a $1,000 scholarship awarded based on talent and need to a senior who will continue their musical education at a college or university. Preference will be given to a student attending College of the Redwoods or Humboldt State University.

You will need to write an autobiographical essay describing your musical interests and accomplishments whether instrumental or vocal. The essay should include continuing and future musical plans, and how the scholarship will be applied.

Along with the essay, you will need to include the following:
  • Student’s Name
  • Home Address
  • Mailing address (if different from home address)
  • Phone Number
  • Parent’s Name(s)
  • Date of graduation and name of school graduated from
  • Name of college planning to attend
  • What you will major in
  • Connection, if any, to the Humboldt Harmonaires
  • CD or DVD representative of your talent-this is mandatory
  • Letter(s) of recommendation (form attached to application)

This is one of the few scholarships we get that are geared for music students so definitely apply!

Humboldt County Farm Bureau Scholarships due April 1st.

Deadline: Sunday April 1, 2012



The Humboldt County Farm Bureau is offering four scholarships due on Sunday April 1, 2012. They are:

Henri and Lanette Rousseau Memorial Scholarship

For students who plan to pursue a course of study in Agriculture, Science, Education or Vocational Education. Scholarships range in size from $400-$1200 and may be reapplied for annually.

Qualifications:
  • Major or Minor in Agriculture, Agricultural related fields or Science including education or teaching courses in Ag or related fields of science
  • Graduate from a Humboldt County School
  • Full-time student attending an accredited junior college, four-year college or vocational school
Scholarships are limited to four years per student

Production Forestry Scholarship

For students pursuing a career in Production Forestry or Natural Resources which provides support to the Forest Production Industry. Amounts will vary.

Qualifications:
  • Graduate from Humboldt, Del Norte, Mendocino, Trinity, Lake or Napa County High School
  • Attending either College of the Redwoods, Humboldt State University or other colleges offering forestry classes and institutions offering forestry classes and institutions of higher learning approved by the scholarship committee
  • Must be pursuing a career in Production Forestry or Natural Resource which provides support to the Forest Products Industry.

Sterling F. Paddock Scholarship

Qualifications:
  • Major or minor in Agriculture, Agriculture related fields; Vocational Training or General Ed with the intent to pursue agriculture as a career
  • Full time students-12 Units

Humboldt County Wool Growers Association

Dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the sheep industry which includes meat, wool and pelts for textiles and milk from an emerging dairy-sheep industry, the Humboldt County Wool Growers Association is offering a scholarship. Amounts will vary

Qualifications;
  • Major or minor in Agriculture with consideration given to experience in sheep, livestock or wool production.
  • Major or minor in Agriculture with consideration given to experience in sheep, livestock or wool production.
  • Graduate from a Humboldt County High School
  • Full time student attending an accredited junior college, four-year college or vocational school

What to submit for any and all of these scholarships:

  1. Completed application
  2. Cover letter describing your background, goals, involvement in Agriculture (if any) and your future plans.
  3. Official High School Transcript: you will need to send an official transcript that includes your most recent quarter/semester grades. You will then need to send a copy of your final transcript which will include your final GPA and graduation date
  4. SAT or ACT Scores-included on your transcript
  5. Two letters of recommendation

This scholarship just arrived today and copies are now available to pick up in the scholarship box in the Counseling Office.

Eligibility Criteria:
  • Must complete an application and write an essay explaining your future plans and how they relate to the real estate industry
  • Must be a student from Humboldt County who is enrolled or will be enrolled at a college or university.
  • Field of study: professions that are centered on or support at career in real estate sales, real estate finance, real estate management, real estate appraisal, real estate investments, real estate economics, escrow/title, real estate law, interior decorating, construction technologies, landscaping, woodworking, cabinet making, architectural design, engineering and/or drafting.
  • GPA of 3.0 or better
  • One letter of recommendation
  • Scholarship proceeds MUST be used for academic fees and/or academic supplies.
The deadline this year is Friday March 30, 2012.

California Alarm Association Youth Scholarship Program

Deadline March 31, 2012

This scholarship is offered to children of active duty law enforcement and fire service personnel in the State of California graduating from high school in 2012. There are 11 regional awards of $750, one statewide award of $1,750 and two national awards, first place $7,500 and Second place $2,500.

Eligibility criteria:
  • Must be a graduating senior who will receive a diploma from a California accredited high school. 
  • Must be accepted for admission to an accredited college or university
  • Must have a parent or legal guardian who is full-time active duty employee, not on disability, member of a law enforcement agency or a full-time or volunteer member of a fire department located in California.
What to submit:
  • Proof of enrollment in high school via an official high school transcript AND SAT/ACT scores
  • Proof of acceptance to a college or university (letter is acceptable)
  • Proof of parents/guardians occupations (ID or supervisory letter acceptable)
  • Typed 500-700 word essay (subject of essay is on application)
  • Letter of recommendation from teacher, counselor or other agency regarding extracurricular activities

Sanctuary Forest, Inc. Scholarship Applications Are Here!

There are five $1,000 awards available for this scholarship through Sanctuary Forest, Inc.

Sanctuary Forest, Inc, is a non-profit land trust located in Whitethorn, CA. It’s mission is to conserve the Mattole River watershed and surrounding areas for wildlife habitat and aesthetic, spiritual and intrinsic values in cooperation with our diverse community. They are committed to supporting the education of local young people to help build the future economic and environmental health of Humboldt and Mendocino Counties.

Qualifying Process:
  1. Demonstrated Environmental Interest and Essay: Must have demonstrated an active interest in the environment through summer work in environmental-related activities, school projects or long-term personal interest in the environment. Must submit an essay outlining the student’s personal history of involvement with environmental issues and their plans and hopes for the future involvement/employment in environment-related activities.
  2. Demonstrated Academic success.
  3. Accepted to a two or four-year college-must submit proof of admission to qualify for the award.
  4. Fill out application form to provide information on financial resources available.
  5. Letter of recommendation by Principal, Teacher, Guidance Counselor or staff member printed on school letterhead stationary must be submitted with application
  6. Current photo. Must email a current photo. If awarded a scholarship, photo may be used for press releases.
  7. Completed applications must be reviewed and signed by your Principal or Counselor.

Congratulations Annika Botha!

Congratulations to Annika Botha for winning the Young Entrepreneurs Business Challenge!

Annika Botha was awarded $5000 to start her business 'Annika Botha Photography'. Here's what she had to do:

Young Entrepreneurs Business Challenge:

The Young Entrepreneurs Business Challenge is a written business plan competition sponsored by the Humboldt County Office of Education Rising Stars Foundation. Students compete by writing a business plan for a business they are interested in starting in Humboldt County.

Each year the judges grant up to three $5,000 awards for start-up capital. Award money is distributed by the North Coast Small Business Development Center. The North Coast SBDC also provides business consulting services to the winners.

In addition to writing a business plan, all competitors will develop their public speaking skills by giving an elevator pitch presentation in front of a panel of judges made up of local business professionals. Finalist teams give an additional formal presentation.

Site coordinators at Humboldt County high schools provide educational resources and work with students on their entrepreneurial ventures. Mentors from related businesses are brought in to work with students as needed.

When you see Annika, make sure to say Congratulations!

Annika is another fine example of the quality and caliber of Eureka High Students!

We Want Your Acceptance Letters and Emails!!!

The Counseling Office is creating a bulletin board to celebrate all our seniors who have received acceptance  letters or emails from colleges. If you've gotten a letter,  or letters or an email we'd like to have a copy to post on our board. (Some colleges are now notifying by email)

We already have a few but we know there are a lot more out there! We don't want to miss anyone! You can bring in the original and we will make copies or just bring us copies and we will put them on the board. Drop them off in the Counseling office so we can add them to the board.

This is a big accomplishment and we want to acknowledge all of your dedication and hard work.

The Rotary Club of Eureka has announced a new scholarships for the 2012-2012 academic year! There are going to be five $750.00.
For the General Scholarships you must meet the following criteria to apply:

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time student
  • Have active involvement in extracurricular activities and/or community service

California Women in Timber, North Coast Chapter Memorial Scholarship

Due March 25, 2012

The North Coast Chapter of California Women in Timber is offering several scholarships to students who are pursuing a career in the Forest Products Industry OR have immediate family involved in the Forest Products Industry

Qualifications:
  • Scholarships are open to all fields of study, however, students pursuing in a natural resources or forestry and students whose family are/were employed int those industries will be given special consideration
  • In addition: the annual David Kinsey Memorial scholarship is awarded to a student that is pursuing a career in the building trades or the forest products industry.
  • Scholarship amounts will vary between $250- $1,000 depending on amount available and number of qualified applicants
Eligibility Criteria:
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5
  • You are currently or have attended a Humboldt or Del Norte county high school
  • Students must provide proof of enrollment prior to receiving your scholarship award
What to submit:
  1. Completed application
  2. Provide a cover letter (explaining your background and future plans)
  3. Provide and unofficial copy of your most recent transcript
  4. Two letters of recommendation

College Night is tomorrow night Tuesday, March 20, 2012

College Night is tomorrow night Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 6:00pm in the EHS Lecture Hall

Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen! It's time for College Night for students and their parents/guardians! This year's event will be held on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 6:00pm in the Lecture Hall here on the EHS campus.  

Students and their parents are invited to attend this important event designed to assist you as you begin to prepare for your senior year. There will be representatives from the University of California, California State University and Community College systems available to give presentations and to answer your questions.

This is an awesome opportunity whether you will be applying to colleges next year, or just planning for the time when you will be applying. Learn about the requirements for each system and tips you can do now to prepare for the future.

It's never to early to start thinking about your future. Start now while there are experts from t he various school systems available to answer your questions!

Humboldt County Farm Bureau Scholarships Due April 1, 2012

The Humboldt County Farm Bureau is offering four scholarships for students interested in majoring in Agriculture, Science, Education or Vocational Education and are planning to attend an accredited 2 or 4-year College or vocational school.

The Scholarships available are:

  • The Henri and Lanette Rousseau Memorial Scholarship
  • Sterling F Paddock Memorial Scholarship
  • Forestry Production Scholarship
  • Humboldt County Wool Growers Scholarship

United Indian Health Services H. D. "Timm " William Memorial Indian Scholarship due April 2, 2012.

Deadline: April 2, 2012

United Indian Health Services is now accepting applications for the UIHS H. D. "Timm " William Memorial Indian Scholarship that is due April 2, 2012.

The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage more American Indian students to pursue careers in the health field. These include a wide variety of majors and careers. A list of these is included in the application.

Eligibility Criteria:
  • American Indian student or their parents or guardians  that are registered for services at UIHS
  • Have acquired a high school diploma or equivalent GED (State Certified)
  • Plan to attend a 2-year or 4-year college or university as a full time student in the academic  year of 2012-2013
  • Must have an overall GPA of 2.0
Other important criteria that will be considered will include outside activities/interests, community involvement and commitment to and participation in working with American Indian people.

Don't let the "health field" aspect of this keep you from applying for this. The majors and careers vary from Anthropology to Accounting to Native American Studies. It's a long list so check it out.

New Scholarship Available Now-Latin American Club Scholarship

Latin American Club Scholarship Applications are now here. This scholarship is for $300 and is open to all graduating seniors.

Eligibility Criteria:
  • Graduating senior
  • Minimum GPA 2.0
  • Financial need
  • May attend any college, university, or vocational school
  • Any major is eligible

Justin Keele Make A Difference Award (grant)

The Justin Keele Grant is for students at Eureka High School or Zoe Barnum who want to lend a hand. The annual grant of $200 to $2000 is meant to help a deserving individual or group achieve their goals, aspirations, dreams or relief of hardship.

If you have a group, cause or individual in need of assistance and a clear plan of how you will do so, this grant is for you! The grant is intended to help provide tools of all kinds in order for you to help them achieve their goal. Projects which help homeless youth are given preference.

If you want to hold a fundraiser for a group like Betty's Blue Angels or the Homeless Education Project, and coordinate the event, you will be eligible to receive money to help pay for the event. Do you know of an individual or a family who could use a little help, you may be eligible to receive a grant to purchase clothing for school

The idea of this grant is to "Pay It Forward" which means you do a "favor" for someone and instead of them "paying" you back, you do a "favor" for someone else thus paying it forward. It is a great way to help your community and start a chain of giving that will grow and help more and more people. This really can make a difference! And it feels great to volunteer!

Applications Now Available for the Jacob Spencer Memorial Scholarship

Deadline: April 20, 2012 no later than 3:30pm


The Jacob Spencer Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Jacob Andrew Spencer, Eureka High School graduate Class of 2008, who passed away as the result of a tragic automobile accident. Jacob had a strong interest in Auto Mechanics throughout his high school career.

This $500 scholarship will be awarded to a Eureka High School graduating senior who plans to attend College of the Redwoods.

Eligibility Criteria:
·   Must be a graduating senior from Eureka High School
·   Minimum GPA of 2.0
·   Financial need will be considered in case of a tie.
·   Must be planning to attend College of the Redwoods

What to submit:
·   Application
·   Two letters of recommendation (forms attached to application with at least one being from an EHS teacher)

Humboldt State University’s Natural History Museum is Looking for Volunteers!

If you are looking for a volunteer position for a week in the summer, like science and working with children check out this opportunity.

HSU’s Natural History Museum is now recruiting volunteer teaching assistants for its summer youth program.

There are several age group classes. The 4-5 year old classes have a maximum of 10 and are offered from 10:00am-12:00pm. The 6-9 year old classes have a maximum of 12 students and are offered from 1:00pm-4:00pm. Classes will be held between June 25-August 10, 2012

Requirements:
·   Must have experience working with children and an interest in science
·   The museum requires a minimum full week commitment but you may volunteer for more than one week. For the week commitment, you can either volunteer for either the morning or afternoon class or you can volunteer for the whole day.

Duties: Assist the instructors in activities, group management and other duties as needed. Teaching assistants do not plan activities or have any overall responsibility for creating the class. The museum staff expects all volunteer teaching assistants to arrive 15 minutes before and after class time to help prepare for and clean up before and after class.
